BIBD annual dinner

BIBD held its annual dinner for staff under the Islamic bank’s group of companies at the Grand Hall, Indera Samudra of The Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong last Friday.

Themed ‘Nostalgia’, the dinner honoured the hard work of the bank’s employees that had contributed to numerous achievements in the past year.

The dinner started with a recitation of the Doa, which was then followed by welcoming remarks by BIBD Managing Director Javed Ahmad. This then proceeded with presentations for Long Service Awards to around 70 employees from the BIBD group.

Among those present to witness the special occasion was the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Finance Dato Paduka Hj Bahrin Abdullah, who is also the Chairman of the BIBD Board of Directors. Also present were other BIBD board directors and members of the Shariah Advisory Body amongst some 700 personnel from the bank along with its subsidiaries; BIBD At-Tamwil and BIBD Securities.

The annual dinner caps off another milestone year in BIBD’s rich history in Islamic finance, earmarked by notable efforts such as the launch of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, BIBD Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future (ALAF) Programme, along with its first batch of students receiving the programme’s support, among other charitable activities. The programme, now in its second year, aims to help bring more educational opportunities to underprivileged children.

The bank also managed to retain its international recognitions such as the Best Retail Bank in Brunei (The Asian Banker), and the Best Bank in Brunei (Global Finance), and Bank of the Year in Brunei (The Banker).

Also in the year, BIBD has been ranked 42nd in terms of Soundness (Capital Asset Ratio) and 697th overall in the top 1,000 World Banks by “The Banker” in 2014, and 14th Strongest Bank among 500 Banks from Asia pacific by balance sheet by The Asian Banker. Image and text courtesy of BIBD.

Congratulations Sabrina

Photo opportunity with the owner of L’Orient, Sabrina Wong

Late post. A friend of mine Sabrina Wong has finally found a more permanent place for her boutique. Ironically all the different locations that she has tried are all in Kiulap. I kinda prefer her new location of L’Orient and it’s located near Regent Square (newest building) and from the looks of it, her boutique is the first tenant officially operating business in that new building.

So what to expect from L’Orient? If you are into fashion especially the female, you will enjoy the stylish collection designed by Sabrina Wong the owner herself. Now she has upped her game by collaborating with Wilson MC Lau by designing new art fashion collection called the “reach in and stretch out”.

Her shop also sells accessories and bags apart from the interesting range of clothes. The prices may be too high for some but you will know where the dollars are spent. Sabrina has really built her reputation as one of the top designers in Brunei and she has traveled across the world to share her passion and creativity in terms of clothes design.

If you are into a stylish and modern feel look, do consult with Sabrina because she’s really good at it. Do check out her ‘Sab Five Five’ label too. That has been a big hit for her.

Also, keep up to date with the store by visiting its Facebook at www.facebook.com/sabfivefive or its Instagram @sabfivefive. For any enquiries, please contact 2239988 or 8989132.

Quite a good turn out during the official launch

Hj Azhar bin Hj Ahmad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence as the guest of honour during the recent dinner meeting of the Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club.

Normally the meeting for Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club happens on the final week of the month. So recently it was held at the usual place – Mutiara Ballroom at Radisson Hotel. The meeting is different to that of Brunei Speakers’ Club, OTTERS Club and UBD Toastmasters Club. It is done in a formal dinner setting but with the inclusion of toastmasters meeting.

The dinner meeting from Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club is always open to guests and it’s good to see different guests every now and then. The guest of honour then was Hj Azhar bin Hj Ahmad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. He was very impressed with the toastmasters meeting and he gave one a good advice that fear will always be there but it’s how we see fear as opportunity.

This month of April, another dinner session will be held but I’m not currently sure of the dates. If you are interested, you can email me at ranoadidas (a) gmail

Financial planning

BIBD’s Wealth Management Unit (WMU) today, as part of its goal to raise awareness on the benefits of better financial management, delivered a financial planning talk to around forty personnel of the Ministry of Defence. The talk was delivered by BIBD’s own WMU Officer and Islamic Financial Planner, Rozielawati bti Hj Jamil.

One of the motives of these talks was to create awareness among the public on the advantages of current and future wealth management. This is also to support His Majesty’s Titah in conjunction with his birthday on 15th July 2006, “…additional revenue which will be received by the officers and employees of the Government, may be used prudently, while also trying to save through financial planning for future needs.”

Rozielawati started by asking what their financial goals were and commented that one of the basic strategies to achieving it was to manage and plan their finances properly. She continued that every individual will have different financial commitments and concerns throughout different stages of their lives.

She mentions, “When you’re single, you only pay for your personal commitments such as car financing, credit card and personal expenses. However, these commitments change when you get married and have children as you have to consider the expenses of your dependents, takaful/insurance plans, home financing, on top of your own personal commitments.”

Personnel from the Ministry of Defence attending a financial management talk from BIBD’s own Wealth Management Unit officer and Islamic Financial Planner

She also explained that financial commitments shift towards pre-retirement and retirement to include their retirement and medical plans. She also shared how to manage earnings with an ideal financial diet on top of TAP and SCP. An example of an ideal financial diet is to save a minimum of ten percent of basic salary for savings, a maximum of fifteen percent for car financing, a maximum of thirty-five percent for house financing, and a combined fifteen percent for personal financing and credit card.

“It is also recommended to have an additional fund which will only be used in case of any emergencies,” she added. This fund, she advised, should have a provision of at least three to six months of monthly expenses. She shared a few tips on how to maintain the emergency fund such as how to budget and allocate for a consistent monthly saving amount until the emergency fund amount for the account has been reached (the more the better). This includes setting up a standing instruction for periodic transfer of funds and to increase the fund amount to reflect any increments in earnings.

Additionally, she also discussed about their spending requirements during retirement with their old age pension of $250 and a minimum of $150 for SCP. Together they calculated how much they needed to save beforehand in order to live comfortably during their retirement days.

The talk ended with Rozielawati informing the participants on financial planning from an Islamic perspective, which included zakat and the distribution of wealth such as Islamic Will (Wassiyah), gift (Hibah), trust (Amanah) and endowment (Waqaf). To learn more about BIBD’s

Serunai Singers

Late post: I always enjoy the sound of music and a few weeks ago, I experienced a room filled with jazz music and soothing vocals. It was also the first time I saw Serunai Singers performing. I wish to see more of this in the future. Kudos to the team behind it in making an avenue to showcase their talents to music lovers like myself. Keep up the great work!! Just one thing though – make it slightly longer 😀 Thank you, Rebecca, for letting me know of the music showcase.

ISB BGIC

During one of the sessions of Borneo Global Issues Conference

The International School Brunei Borneo Global Issues Conference (ISB BGIC) recently concluded its 11th annual student-led conference on a high note yesterday with over 200 students representing the member countries of the United Nations.

These students, who came from 23 local schools, including the host school, International School Brunei, have participated as Delegates to research a country other than their own, study the culture, history political situation and its position on UN Agenda items, and prepare presentation speeches outlining their position. They have debated global issues from economic and socio-political issues to human rights, security councils and the environment.

The theme for ISB BGIC this year is ‘Combatting World Diseases’. Some issues include questions of the safety and security of humanitarian or medical aid workers and volunteers in commission in nations outside their respective nationalities, reassessing and evaluating the precautionary measures undertaken by nations against the outbreak of Ebola and appropriate response(s) to disease outbreak contrary to natural disasters.

Last Monday passed resolutions were debated in the General Assembly. All the Delegates had profusely researched the countries and topics they had been. The Secretaries General, Parliamentarians and Committee Chairs administered and controlled the conference and debate, demonstrated a mastery of parliamentary procedure, and provided strong leadership.

James Gilmour, ISB BGIC XI coordinator, in his closing remarks mentioned that he was a bit worried on the first day as the delegates were very quiet. But within a few days, he was extremely glad that the students were able to engage with each other, discuss and debate among each other in finalising the meeting’s resolutions, and he thought that the students did a fantastic job.

The ISB BGIC concluded with a certificate presentation and students’ performances. School representatives, Floor Secretaries, Volunteers, as well as teaching staffs and admins who have helped in the preparation of ISB BGIC, were also recognised for their efforts during this closing ceremony.

For the students who took part in the International School Brunei Borneo Global Issues Conference, this is a defining moment in their development and will play a role in their future career choices, university admission and personal commitment to making this world a better place. Press release by International School of Brunei.

Milestones for BIBD

Salman Ashraf Khan, BIBD Treasure, receiving the Islamic Bank of the Year

James Chua, Co-Deputy Treasurer of BIBD, receiving the Qatar Deal of the Year

One of the leading banks in Brunei, BIBD hit another milestone as they emerged Islamic Bank of the Year Brunei and Qatar Deal of the Year in two categories of the Islamic Finance News (IFN) Awards 2015.

The event took place at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and representatives from BIBD were Salman Ashraf Khan and, BIBD Treasurer and James Chua, Co-Deputy Treasurer of BIBD. This has shown that BIBD has been making a great presence in the international Islamic Finance arena.

The recognition for Islamic Bank of the Year Brunei continues BIBD’s string of “Best Bank in Brunei” awards, a distinction that the bank notes with pride and which reinforces its commitment to better serving its customers and community. The bank received the award for Qatar Deal of the Year due to its participation as one of the main Arrangers for Ezdan Holding’s USD 500 million international Ijarah syndication. The 100% Islamic deal adhered strictly to the very highest Ijarah and Loan Market Association standards, and was the first of its kind for a Qatari corporation and the Qatari real estate industry. The deal was also able to attract conservative accounts like ADIB and Qatar First Bank.

To be recognized in the IFN is no easy feat. IFN is categorically recognised as the Islamic Finance industry’s leading publication. With a world-wide readership in excess of 21,000 industry practitioners and regulators, the IFN Awards offer its winners a truly global audience and a phenomenal vehicle in which to reach one’s clients, potential clients and peers.

Established in 2006, the IFN Awards honours the best in the Islamic financial industry. It is one of the most prestigious awards and highly recognised by the global Islamic capital markets. Selection of category winners is based on an elimination process where a panel of experts from non-competing organisations sieve through all submissions until just one transaction in each category remains. This year, over 300 nominations in over 25 categories were received, resulting in the most competitive deal of the year competition since its inception.

2nd outlet

Thank you, Denise, for the invitation during the opening of the second outlet of Paddington House of Pancake at Gadong (next to McDonald’s)

I’m glad that PHOP or better known as Paddington House of Pancake has opened its second outlet and it’s located at Gadong. This will be convenient for many and it’s strategically placed in the heart of Gadong. For those who are not aware of what PHOP, let me simply describe as a savoury of western dishes with a unique way of serving them with pancakes, well not all of them but you will get the gist.

My favourite has always been their burgers because of the home made patties. The ambience is similar to the first outlet though it’s a little more intimate due to the allowance of space.

The menus are not finalized just yet but the dishes are different from the Berakas outlet. You will notice maybe one or two regular dishes in the new menu. So plenty of reasons to try out the dishes.

One thing to look for is the berry ice cube drinks. The fruits such as watermelon or oranges will be sliced and frozen into ice cube shapes and then you simply pour the ice tea drinks to blend with the fruited ice cubes. Amazing combo!!

You can read more on Thanis’ entry of Paddington House of Pancakes and he has ton more pictures to show. Congratulations Denise and your family for the second outlet. I am a happy man 😀

The Dino Experience

How it looks when night falls. Image courtesy of Dino Expo Brunei Facebook

I don’t know why there is so much craze on Dinosaurs. Last December and January, D’Sunlit had their dinosaur displays for the public. This time round, this is supposedly the biggest.. well, as it was marketed, ASEAN’s Largest Dino Expo and it will end on 12th April 2015. Maybe because with the popular upcoming summer movie Jurassic World. Honestly, dinosaurs are not my cup of tea personally. If it was a land full of walking zombies, you can count me in 😀

As reported, they are expecting thousands of visitors to visit the Dino Expo at BRIDEX. I had a sneak preview before it was actually completed but I had an overall feel of the expo. The only thing that caught my interest was the Electric Car Amusement Ride since like I said, I’m not a big fan of dinosaurs. That thing is pretty cool indeed.

I had my quick rounds with Michelle from The Brunei Times. For more information and inquiries about the Dino Park Exhibition, please contact 8728178 or 2260498. Tickets are selling at $30 for adults and $15 for children. You can click here on their Facebook for more info.

Flapjack

I visited Flapjack House last year but never really got to their dishes. Two weeks ago, I had a mini feast with Winnie Sia, trying out a variety of dishes that Flapjack House offers. The one that caught my taste bud is the Black Pepper Chicken. It’s one of the newest dish and I highly recommend you to order that.

The cafe also serves breakfast and it starts from 7am and business closes at 10pm daily. So do try out the dishes they offer for breakfast. They offer “Crepe Kahwin” with kaya and peanut butter to localise the taste. Their pancakes are home made too.

Flapjack is managed by Eugene Seah who had the idea in opening a cafe after his experience in Australia.

So where is Flapjack house located? It’s located behind The Arch Taurean and you can call 245 0987 for reservation. You can follow them on social media – Flapjack House Facebook page or @flapjackhouse on instagram

JIS IB Group 4 Project

Press release from Jerudong International School. At Jerudong International School (JIS), there are two programmes offered to Sixth form students; the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (A-Levels) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). Students in the A Level programme will either study three or four A-levels, plus Core Studies and PE. However students in the IB programme will study six subjects: three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. They must choose one subject from each of Groups 1-5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from Group 6, or the student may choose another subject from Groups 2, 3, or 4 (an elective).

One of the assessments for Group 4 is an internal assessment where practical work is carried out and recorded by the students. The Group 4 project is an integrated, collaborative task where students work with other students from different sciences. Below, Joseph Sleiman, a Year 12 IB Student at JIS describes what they recently did for this year’s Group 4 project.

“The International Baccalaureate (IB) Group 4 Project……..a collaborative activity where students work together on a scientific or technological topic……..’to encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method’……yeah, yeah, yeah…….that’s what the theory says, but, what did WE do here at Jerudong International School (JIS) in our Group 4 Project???

JIS Year 12 International Baccalaureate students on their Group 4 project

JIS Year 12 International Baccalaureate students on their Group 4 project

At the beginning of Term Two, all the Year Twelve IB students were sorted into four different groups, some ending up with friends and others with people they have never worked with in their life. In the first meeting, we were introduced to the project – produce an experiment that will measure a time period of between two and ten minutes accurately! (No watches allowed!!!). We were also informed that there would be a prize for the most accurate timing – my competitive nature kicked into gear! The teams then discussed, brainstormed, and shared ideas. Creativity was everywhere! Teachers also contributed opinions and encouraged ideas that could be translated into real life.

The following two weeks were the ‘Action Stage’. Two sessions, each four hours long, to trial, test and refine our method(s) – as well as lots of informal chatting at break times and in the evenings. This part was where communication and patience was tested. Things would go wrong, timings made would be totally off, equipment would break and whole methods would be scrapped for better ones. Though problematic and stressful at times, all of us had fun working together on presenting and preparing the experiment.

The final ‘Evaluation Stage’ was soon upon us and each team was ready and very ambitious, everyone’s eyes set on the prize! All the students were visibly anxious, rushing to complete one last test trial and finish off Display boards to present our completed product. Once the trivialities were concluded, the teachers began the countdown… and Carl Orff’s “O Fortuna” blared through the speakers – an appropriately dramatic piece for the occasion. The tension in the atmosphere had peaked and ‘feisty’ remarks were exchanged between groups as the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Piper, collected the calculated times. In his characteristic bantering, he stretched out the suspense to its limit and after what felt like decades, revealed the JOINT winners: both recording the exact time of the piece! However, amazingly, the other two times were within two seconds of the actual time! The prizes were handed out and we all left the classroom reflecting on an enjoyable educational experience with teamwork and collaboration at the forefront of it all.

The main emphasis we take away as students is the importance of cooperation and the procedure of creating a scientific investigation – not necessarily the results/success of the experiment. And best of all we enjoyed the experience; it gave us a fun way to appreciate the wonders of scientific method!”

Snapfeed at CF15

Team Snapfeed briefing the local media

Six months ago, Snapfeed launched their apps on IOS and Android. Six months later (now), they have totally revamped the mobile apps for the convenience of the users. Now you can browse with ease and the app looks more structured and easy to follow.

The new interface allows you to browse to content such as deals being offered, information such news and movie times (and even movie trailers). Other exciting stuff are such as their digital loyalty cards with the use of QR codes. For the moment, Snapfeed has dealt with their current merchants such as KFC, Freshco, Burgerking and I Love Yoo to name a few. Do download the Snapfeed app and see what’s on offer.

For those who registered at their Snapfeed booth at the Consumer Fair this week, you can stand a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Note or a Samsung Galaxy S5. This is only applicable if you signed up at their booth this week till Sunday. They will also provide a free photo session featuring the me-in-a-box booth.

Snapfeed booth is easy to find and it’s located in front of the Plenary Hall at the Orange Zone. I guess that’s the best location as it’s the central part of the Consumer Fair. Have fun browsing through the app.

Papparich turns 1

Their Pappa Char Kuey Teow is one of their best sellers among the patrons of Papparich located in Gadong. I recently “tapau-ed” a few dishes for a dinner function and let’s not forget one of my favourites now – the Pappa Deep Fried Crispy Chicken Skin.. Yummeehh….

Good thing now is Papparich is having their 1st anniversary promotion where you can enjoy 10% everything until 31st January. So you have a few more days to go. I will probably pop down this week to satisfy my craving for the Pappa Deep Fried Crispy Chicken Skin and their curry laksa..

Papparich is located at Block G of Abdul Razak Complex and you won’t miss it because their signage is the biggest one in Gadong if I’m not mistaken. You can check out more of their menus here but not all the new dishes are included just yet.

Sneak preview for CF15

It’s the 15th time that D’Sunlit has organised such event and it has become a Brunei household name ever since its inception since 2008. This time it will take place on January 31st (tomorrow) till Sunday, 1st February at the International Convention Centre from 10am to 10pm.

This time, there will plenty of activities for the public as compared to last time and many activity partners as well involved. Event partners include Kingston Beverage and Creamery Sdn Bhd, Oregon Systems, IBIC Sdn Bhd, RIPAS Hospital, Braun Sdn Bhd, Ho Tai Company Sdn Bhd and MagicLee Entertertainment.

During the five-day fair, various activities such as a unique theme park, lucky draws, and entertainment for children will be held as well as charitable activities such as a blood donation drive.

According to Ting Chui San, Marketing Executive of D’Sunlit, the consumer fair will help to promote SMEs in Brunei and of course, CF is always a good platform to expose businesses. The CF will boast at least 430 booths and you will also enjoy goods and services from ASEAN countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines.

The event is also made possible with the help of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

I shall be posting more news and stories, tying to the CF15 this week and you can also catch updates on my IG @ranoadidas. So where will the momentum of the crowd be this week? Definitely ICC.

Snapfeed is going pretty aggressive this week and relaunching their App. Do download the app at the booth and stand a chance to win a Samsung Note 4. Exciting things to come from Snapfeed in the next few months.

The Toastmasters Journey

Maroon jacket mode on with inspirational speaker Robin Sieger

I’m always pleased when we have guests coming in and they learnt of a toastmasters through means of my social media updates and blog post. And to see them turning up to our meetings (every Tuesday) show thats that we are doing something right for the community. We have broken the stigma that toastmasters is just about being a great speaker or just being a leader of your own but it’s the synergy and the positive conducive environment that allows an individual to lower down his/her shield, ego and fear. It’s not just about public speaking and hence I’m not surprised by the increase of new members notably Derby Teo, Rahul and Pooja.

Last weekend, we had a great time at Kota Kinabalu as we embarked in a training session conducted by toastmasters club in KK. Though I can’t comment much about the training session but the evening session with Robin Sieger paid off our dues and what a fantastic character he is. I saw him spoke last year at the Toastmasters International Convention in Kuala Lumpur and I was amazed then. The recent session was more intimate and I managed to catch up with him and talked about life. I do hope he does come to Brunei or perhaps we can invite him to speak to schools and our younger generation because he is a great testament and role model for success.

A big thank you to all my friends in toastmasters and especially to Shawn Cassidy Narcis and Ruey Narcis, the pillars of toastmasters in Brunei Darussalam, for their continuous support and guiding the young team to greater heights. 2015 will be an awesome year for Brunei toastmasters members and I’m very privileged and honoured to be part of the team and contribute back to the community.

If you want to know more about toastmasters, you can reach me at ranoadidas gmail.com and I can guarantee you is that toastmasters is a fun, enjoying learning experience. Below are pictures from our recent trip in KK.

Facelift at Baiduri at Muara

Delicious aroma of coffee permeated the air as Baiduri Bank’s CEO Pierre Imhof and Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Mohd Riza Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos toured the newly opened, relocated Muara Branch of Baiduri Bank yesterday morning.

Mohd Riza was there as the guest of honour at the official opening of the branch, which was previously located at Bangunan Tiga Tingkat, at the ground floor of Al-Warasah Commercial Centre in Muara Town.

The relocation was due to the increasing number of customers and with it the demand for products and services from Baiduri. The new branch is twice as large and has twice the number of staff, and is now able to provide a full range of banking products and services to cater to individuals as well as businesses, and this includes complimentary financial planning consultation.

“The upgrading of this branch is part of Baiduri Bank’s branch network configuration project where we redesign each branch to suit the market segment and its surrounding area and demographics. The modern layout is designed to allow customers to carry out their banking transactions in a relaxed and comfortable setting. In addition, the bank seeks to craft a workplace that promotes work efficiency and employee wellbeing,” said Pierre Imhof in his speech at the opening.

He added that Baiduri made significant investments to the new branch — greater customer experience and accessibility — and he was proud to add that the Muara Branch is the first of its kind to offer the café banking experience with the adjoined “It’s A Grind” coffeehouse.

After the speech, the guest of honour toured the premises, lead by the Regional Manager of the Brunei-Muara District Alvina Chung, and the Branch Manager Alice Lee before retiring to the adjoining coffeehouse to enjoy a cup of “It’s A Grind” coffee and some brunch. Rainforest Lodge

The Temburong Adventure

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, officiating the opening of the Rainforest Lodge.

Freme Travel’s new Adventure Course and refurbished Rainforest Lodge are set to welcome more visitors to Temburong National Park. Both these new facilities promise exciting activities and all the modern comforts of home in a pristine rainforest environment for both overseas tourists and local residents to enjoy while also creating more job opportunities and playing a part in boosting the local economy.

Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, officiated the launch.

Freme Travel’s Chairman, Pg Dato Sharifuddin Bin Pg Metali asserted that safety and environmental issues were uppermost on the agenda of making Temburong National Park a ‘must visit’ tourist destination, and that special attention will be paid to sanitation, waste disposal, risks of water pollution and safety.

Built in 2002, Rainforest Lodge has seen a surge of tourists from China, Hong Kong, and Japan, and was upgraded and refurbished recently in response to the growing demand of tourists. The lodge now accommodates 40+ tourists in new wooden bunk beds and a further 15+ in tents. It also has new terrace dining area and kitchen.

The lodge now employs 10 full time local Temburong staff, including guides, boatmen and a local caterer.

The Adventure Course highlights include a 15 meter flying fox, the high rope bridge, the hanging bridge across the river and a canopy tower for birdwatching.

This will give more vibrant and healthy competition with Ulu-Ulu Resort which has been around for many years and I love that place too. With many things developing in Temburong such as the Games Village and the much talked about bridge, there are many potential opportunities with the district.

A winning luck for Hj Hidop Hj Salleh who managed to unlock his brand new Mazda 3 1.5 (A) Sedan. This was part of the ‘Purchase a Mazda to Win a Mazda’ grand draw last weekend. In attendance was Japanese Ambassador Noriko Iki who came as in the capacity as the guest of honour and she presented the mock key to the grand winner.

Meanwhile, second prize winner Hj Reduan Hj Rosman met with thunderous claps as he opened the door of a Mazda 2 1.5 (A) Sedan while Hj Muhaimin Hj Mohamed walked away with a cash prize of $5,000.

The consolation prizes were also attractive. 10 of them received returned tickets to Bali for two while the other ten walked away with an Apple iPhone 5C. Furthermore, a cash prize of $300 were given to 40 lucky participants.

Al-Fatihah

I’ve bumped to him occasionally during my coverages and it was a shock to hear of the tragic news. Syazwan Yussof (1994-2014). Al-Fatihah. Image courtesy of @hamiqie278

I was shocked after learning of the passing of a young guy that I got acquainted with two years ago. Only 20 years old and he has departed us after a fatal car accident two days ago. I didn’t know he was working for The Brunei Times as a photographer and I always sense his desire to take photo of events from time to time.

Jenazah (funeral) prayers were held at his home in Kampung Salambigar before he was laid to rest at the Kg Salambigar Mosque cemetery.

A tahlil ceremony will be held in his memory last night at The Brunei Times headquarters, Wisma Haji Mohd Taha, Jalan Gadong, Bandar Seri Begawan. Syazwan is survived by his parents, Hj Yussof Hj Baha and Hjh Halimah Hj Abidin, as well as his three younger siblings. My deepest condolences goes to his family, relatives and friends and I also feel your loss @waneewano. He is in good hands now. Al-Fatihah.

Back to normal operations

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) is pleased to announce to all of its customers and partners that all of its banking operations, including its BIBD counter operations, have resumed its normal operations as of this afternoon.

Hajah Noraini Haji Sulaiman, BIBD Deputy Managing Director, conveyed her deepest regrets for the service interruptions that were experienced and sincerely apologised.

She further added “Alhamdulilah, we have resumed operations this afternoon as our system was fully restored allowing all our customers to our full range of services. As a growing bank, we understand you expect more from us and we will continue to work harder to meet those expectations. We will also work diligently to ensure that this occasion remains a one-off.”

The main batch processing system encountered unexpected issues that resulted in significant delays in completing the end of day processes. This has forced the Bank to close its branch operations and resulted in intermittent disruptions to the Bank’s alternative channels – Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs), Cheque Deposit Machines (CQMs), BIBD Online and Mobile services, and also the Debit card services.

As part of BIBD’s strategic plans for business growth, the Bank is upgrading its main hardware infrastructure, which will be completed in early 2015. This will support the growth plan and strengthen the technical capabilities to ensure that similar disruptions will not recur. BIBD continues to reassure the disruptions did not affect any customer data, and banking information remains secure and protected.

Flood in Malaysia

A resident of Kampung Keroh, Kelantan, uses a water tank to save himself as flood waters continue to rise. Image courtesy of Bernama.

This is another tragedy in Malaysia as more than 90,000 people were displaced due to the flood. Kelantan had the highest number of evacuees at 32,343, followed by Terengganu (28,991), Pahang (24,316), Perak (4,335) and Perlis (265).You can read more of the details here.

One of the popular hotels in Pahang, Mutiara Taman Negera Resort, was affected by the flood. A lot of tourists were stranded and they had to use helicopters to rescue them.

Torrential downpours have wrecked havoc on local transport systems and communication lines, making it tougher for rescue wor-kers to do their job. Most overland public transport services have been disrupted following severe floods which hit the East Coast and northern peninsular states.

My prayers to those affected by the flood and I hope my friends and relatives are safe there.

It’s Bonus time

Yesterday’s queue at Tanjung Bunut. It’s bonus time and most of the salaries are from BIBD if I’m not mistaken. Good thing I’m not in Brunei right now. Image courtesy of Jason Rumpun.

The scene taken last night and maybe this is no coincidence that there was such a queue of this magnitude. The happiest bunch are definitely the kids. A great payoff session. Image courtesy of @serirabakri

Now where can you make use of your bonus? Of course, the current ongoing Brunei Salebration. However, I opted to shop outside of Brunei because of the varieties it can offer and also with great discounts everywhere. Furthermore, I’m more into the quality it offers. This is one of the shops in Singapore that has discounts up to 50% on their clothes and apparels.

Announcement from BIBD

From BIBD: Dear Valued Customers,

Kindly be informed all BIBD branches will be closed today due to technical problems.

BIBD is working hard to resolve this delay and customers are encouraged to use other banking channels such as ATMs, CDMs, BIBD Online, BIBD Mobile and BIBD Cards which is operating as normal.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter. Do follow their Facebook Page or @bibdbrunei instagram for updates.

Satay Burger in town

I’ve tried this particular Satay Burger before back in Singapore months ago. So I’m quite glad that Sinofood Express, the franchisee of the Burger King franchise, officially launch this special flavoured burger which unfortunately will be available for a limited time only.

Why I recommend you the Satay Burger is simple. A real satay sauce rich in spices and peanuts with real quality meat that is juicy and flavourful. This will be available until 31st December 2014. So do hurry and grab yourself a Satay Burger.

The best part about this is that you have the choice – either a flame-grilled WHOPPER beef patty or a flame-grilled Tendergrill – sandwiched between a lightly toasted sesame seed bun topped with sliced onions and drizzle generously with satay sauce made using crunchy peanuts.

You can follow Burger King of their Facebook Page or instagram @burgerkingbrunei. Did you know that Burger King will be opening a few more outlets pretty soon. I shall keep you posted on that.

The journey of Asari Rashid

BIBD, via its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, showed its full support for Asari Rashid to become the first Bruneian to participate in the Polar Circle Marathon. BIBD’s support for Asari was aimed to create and raise awareness for developing a community that cares, whilst playing its role as an integral and strong partner of the community. This partnership is developed to encourage a positive influence and inspire other members of the community to support similar awareness raising efforts.

Asari is an epileptic PhD student from Newcastle University, UK and a lecturer in Institut Teknologi Brunei. He is also the 1st Bruneian to run the Polar Circle Marathon, participating in the Polar Bear Challenge, which tested his ability to run both the marathon and a half-run within the two days of the competition.

Earlier before the Polar Circle Marathon, Asari mentioned, “I’ve had a lot of people telling me it’s difficult but this is something I really want to try.” Asari, clearly unfazed by the idea of the run, continued, “I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009 with tendency of having seizures but it has never stopped me from doing what I love. I am also very thankful to BIBD for providing me with the opportunity to embark on my dream, as together we are able to show the world that everyone has the ability to succeed, regardless of their drawbacks.

“I was inspired to take the feat in order to raise awareness of the needs of people with diseases and show that we are both resilient and determined not to let it become an obstacle in pursuing our dreams including achieving better education. Everyone needs education and it will start from their adolescence, children need to be given as much opportunity in life as possible.”

Asari is no stranger to long distance running, having trained with the Tyne Bridge Harriers running club, had already competed in numerous challenges including completed a Aviva Singapore Ironman 70.3, three marathons, and an Ultramarathon “The Wall” from Carlisle to Newcastle Gateshead, which saw him running 110km miles in an impressive 15hrs and 55mins. The Polar Circle Marathon included a classic 42.195km marathon and a half marathon. The Marathon was held in the worst running conditions of under – 20°C in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland for two consecutive days.

Starting at Kangerlussuaq, the run passes the endless ice and arctic tundra of Greenland, which makes up the glacial deposit landscapes and soundless arctic desert. Part of the route takes place on the 100,000-year-old ice sheet but the main part of the race is run on roads, mostly covered in snow that connects to the inland ice just north of the Polar Circle.

A similar effort for awareness, BIBD’s ALAF Programme (Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future), provides a similar avenue for all members of the public to support and provide assistance to underprivileged and orphaned students, through sponsorships of basic needs, educational items and welfare, as well as mentoring and counselling, so that the students can stay focused on their education and maximise their potential. Through ALAF, BIBD hopes to lend its support to His Majesty’s 2035 vision of achieving a 100 per cent level of education and over time, reduce poverty in Brunei.

To further support the aspiration of this program and to enable the deserving students to pursue their education and dreams, members of the public are welcome to provide contributions with a minimum of B$1.01 via the bank’s e-banking channels, BIBD Online, BIBD Mobile, or use any BIBD ATM machines. The public can also use the standing instruction function in their accounts to provide a continuous donation stream into the ALAF account at 1018181811.

AITI Grant Scheme

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has opened another window for applications to its “GRANT for the Development of Local ICT and Digital Media Industries” from 1 November 2014 to 31 December 2014.

The AITI GRANT offers partial funding opportunities for local businesses as well as foreign companies with local partners from the ICT and digital media fields to acquire enhancement, ownership and marketing assistance for their existing “Brunei-Made” product or prototype that has significant commercial viability. There are three (3) grant types available, namely:

a) Enhancement Grant – for improving and upgrading existing products;

b) Ownership Grant – for obtaining certification and quality management systems such as trademarks, patent, and IPR; and

c) Marketing Grant – for marketing and improving existing branding, packaging, design or labeling.

The grant amount varies depending on the type of grant applied and the classification of the businesses. Each applicant is allowed to apply for more than one grant type for the same product with a maximum cap of B$300,000 per category within eighteen (18) months project duration.

To be eligible for the AITI GRANT, an applicant must have valid AITI Accredited Business (AAB) Status and has financial capability to inject an initial amount of self-funding prior to the start of the GRANT project. The applicant must also have developed an existing product or prototype and wishes to obtain the grant to improve and enhance the technological aspects of the product, to improve marketing strategies, as well as to acquire a wider coverage of Intellectual Property Rights protection for their product.

Applications will be evaluated based on four main criteria: technical merits, commercial potential, financial resources, and project plan and capacity to deliver. Further evaluation will also emphasize on Brunei-Made elements of the proposed product as well as the relevancy to any of the following areas: application tools and platforms, communication, e-learning, financial industry application, government and public sectors, health and wellbeing, social inclusion and community, industrial application, media and entertainment technology, ICT research and development, retail and supply chain management, security, and sustainability and environment technology.

AITI Grant Scheme

AITI’s GRANT was initiated to assist the local ICT companies to further develop their ICT and digital media related products and encourage R&D activities and capabilities in producing local innovative Brunei Made products with commercial potential through Government funding.

Since its inception in 2010, AITI has awarded grant to fourteen local ICT and digital media related businesses with an overall amount of B$1.9 million funded under the National Development Plan. To date, ten recipients have already completed their grant projects where some of these products have been now made readily available in the market. The first GRANT recipient, MARS Enterprise, has successfully developed their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution and has penetrated the overseas market within this region.

Two recipients, John Harith Technology Sdn Bhd and ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd, have successfully run their pilot projects on Halal Food Traceability System and iCLID, respectively with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Customs and Immigration Department. Other grant recipients include Crescent Sdn Bhd, Alif Technologies Sdn Bhd, BruGPS Technologies Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Indah Sejahtera Development and Services Sdn Bhd, Ambuyart Animations Company, Cinematicpro Services, Mediahikmah, PHMD Publishing Company, SocialBuzz Advertising, MeSixty Sdn Bhd and Giftbox Enterprise Sdn Bhd.
