Greetings from Chiang Mai

Sorry for the late of updates, guys!! As some of you know from my social media update that I’m currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand and I shall be back pretty soon. So far a great trip and an amazing place to be here indeed in Chiang Mai. I haven’t really wandered around as our hotel, Veranda Resort Chiang Mai is pretty far away from the city (about half and hour to the city) but the good thing is that they provide shuttle buses.

And to my Muslim friends and supporters of RA, I would like to wish you all Selamat Berpuasa and may Allah bless all of you. It’s such a blessing to be fasting once again in the month of Ramadhan. It’s the most anticipated month of our calendar and it’s amazing that I’m away from Brunei and having my first fasting period in Thailand. I do miss the environment of Ramadhan back at home because for me, it’s the only time (I make) to spend time with family.

Currently I’m here typing away in this awesome room I’m staying at Veranda Resort Chiang Mai. I’ve seen the pictures from the website but the feeling is different when you are actually physically here. The greenery here is impressive though I still prefer the ones at Maya Ubud Resort (Bali). We will be staying here for a few more days before heading back to Bangkok.

So at the meantime, I won’t be posting much news on RA as I’m taking time off for a while. And yea, I do need my break too 😀 I shall be back to full force after 15th July 😀 Oh yea, don’t forget to log on to http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.org for updates on our Sungkai and it’s still a bit messy though since we still have to finalise the list of participating restaurants and cafes. If you guys are interested, do drop me and email at ranoadidas gmail.com and yes, we are having special package as we are introducing a new package for food e-vendors.

Below are some of the pictures of the Veranda Resort Chiang Mai 😀

We have arrived at Veranda Chiang Mai, High Resort and this is the entrance of the hotel

This is how the reception desk looks like.. A bit weird for the eyes *lol*

Guava juice with lime for our welcoming drink

So much green around the hotel.. Me likes!!!

More green in the area

It was quite a walk to our rooms though

Love the lightings at the lobby area

Great service from the hotel

Galleria YMRM

Galleria YMRM, Value for Money

Hari Raya is just three weeks away. Time flies very fast indeed. We are already in the second week of Ramadhan and the crowd have been rising at Galleria YMRM. Since Hari Raya is just around the corner, I made my 2nd pitstop to Galleria YMRM (this time to both Batu Satu and Tungku Link).

Galleria YMRM have quite a selection of fabric for “cara melayu” and what impressed me the most is the IMA fabric which is the Japanese cotton material. The price is higher than the normal type but now they have a promotional price where it’s being slashed from $19.90 to $15.90 per meter. What’s great about this material is that it’s of high quality and it’s pretty cooling and soothing to the skin. Last year, they have 20 different colours and this year, they have 60 different colours with the IMA material. This really shows how good the material and the trust it has coming from customers.

They also have good quality ones for the ladies for Baju Kurung and they have different price range from the affordable ones to the high end and of course, the quality is guaranteed. It’s no surprise that most of the tailors in Brunei make their fabrics and textile according to the management. For the ladies, if you want something more elegant as in Kebaya type, then I recommend you go fo the laces and YMRM have tons of those in both branches.

Galleria YMRM are not only popular for selling fabrics for men and women but they are also selling in-house lights and also “cucul” lights for Hari Raya. So if you need some new lightings in your house, they have a wide selection to choose from.  YMRM already have tents outside their premise selling deco lights (cucul) and this have been their trademark for a few years already.

Galleria YMRM are selling IMA quality textiles for Cara Melayu. Highly recommended.

Now you can make your Kebaya with this material

Another hot seller at Galleria YMRM is the “Senjang”. Apparently quite a few VIPs buy their senjangs here because of the quality and the price. For a hand stitch one especially from Kelantan or Tregganu, the price can fetch at least $700 to $1,000 if you buy in Malaysia. However, for the same quality and material, the particular senjang from Trengganu only cost $300 and many have shopped in YMRM for the same reason.

Anyway, Galleria YMRM also have different price range of senjang. There is even senjang that costs $14.90 for budget customers. They also have prices from $19.90, $39.90, $44.90 and many more that will suit to the budget of the customers. So if you are in need for a quick fix on Senjang, I highly recommend you Galleria YMRM.

Head down to Galleria YMRM where textiles and fabrics are the cheapest in town and of high quality too. With their intention to give value for money, this has created a good loyalty relationship with their customers. Do visit their branches – one in Tungku Link Spg 100 (you can’t miss this spot) and the other is at Batu Satu, near BIBD branch. You can call their number at Batu Satu 222 3343 or Tungku Link 245 2344.

They also sell trays and serving dishes ideal for Hari Raya

Hari Raya is just four weeks away. Time flies very fast indeed. It’s already the 2nd half of the year and insyaAllah tomorrow could be the beginning of Ramadhan and this depends on the sighting of the new moon later in the afternoon. Since Hari Raya is just around the corner, I made a pitstop to Galleria YMRM to see if there’s anything interesting that I can find for my “cara melayu”. Good thing about cara melayu is that they are just based on colours and not design wise.

Galleria YMRM have quite a selection of fabric for “cara melayu” and what impressed me the most is the IMA fabric which is the Japanese cotton material. The Bank also received the “Best Islamic Deal, Brunei” for its part as one of the mandated lead arrangers for Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) US$170 million limited-recourse Islamic Financing facility.

Present on hand to receive the prestigious awards on behalf of BIBD were Haji Minorhadi Haji Mirhassan, Head of Institutional Banking and Sabri Ulus, Head of Treasury and Markets.

Haji Minorhadi Haji Mirhassan, Head of Institutional Banking of BIBD and Sabri Ulus, Head of Treasury and Markets of BIBD received the prestigious awards – “Best Islamic Bank, Brunei”; “Best Islamic Retail Bank, Brunei”; “Best Islamic Trade Finance Bank, Brunei”; “Best Islamic Loan Syndication” and “Best Islamic Deal, Turkey” by The Asset Triple A Islamic Finance Awards 2013 held at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The BGC transaction, for which BIBD was awarded the “Best Islamic Deal, Brunei ” was the largest financing transaction in Brunei Darussalam in 2012, which also attracted participation from other leading international banks in Asia. It involved the refinancing of a previously owned vessel, along with the financing of a new vessel. This innovative Shariah compliant facility has a sound financing structure with a comprehensive security package reflecting the importance of the project-driven nature of the financing. This transaction increases the capabilities of BGC and is an add-on to its existing fleet of vessels, which plays a fundamental part in supporting the LNG supply chain from Brunei to Japan and Korea. This, in turn, is paramount to the long-term economic future of Brunei Darussalam.

The Asset Triple A Awards is Asia’s defining recognition for excellence in the industry. Now into its second decade, the perception and appreciation of The Triple A’s continues to strengthen. This reputation has been built upon the stringent methodology, combined with the rigorous approach to the selection of the winners of the coveted Triple A. The awards are adjudicated by The Asset’s Board of Editors who collectively have broad and profound experience, stretching over two decades in evaluating industry awards in Asia. UPS form Prolink

Protect your desktop computers at home or at the office with the Prolink Pro Series line of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), available at Netcom Computer House.

“If you’re worried about losing your documents or data due to unforseen circumstances, such as sudden blackouts or a dangerous thunderstorm, then this is the perfect device for you,” said Product Manager (Consumer) at Netcom Hj Mohd Hassan Hj Md Gafar.

One of the many UPS that comes under the Pro series line is the PTO850VU/SU, which the Product Manager explained is able to provide five to 10 minutes of power to run a desktop computer, giving users an ample amount of time to save important data and documents, as well as properly shutting down their computers.

“Most damages that occur to computers is when it is not properly shut down, resulting in either a damaged motherboard, which costs about $200 to $400 to fix, or even a corrupted operating system,” he shared.

He added that the Pro series UPS can prevent all of these problems, as it not only acts as a back-up power device that charges automatically when connected to a desktop computer, it also provides power surge protection.

“When connected, the unit is able to produce a balanced current output and prevents undervoltage brownouts and overvoltage,” he added.

“So, rather than spending $300 or more to fix damages to your desktop computer, simply spend $108 on one unit like the PTO850VU/SU and keep your computer protected.”

Huge turnout for PSI runners

The participation for the second PSI Charity Run drew huge numbers as compared to the first one that happened back in June. The first charity run drew over 500 runners whereas yesterday’s run drew more almost close to 2,000 participants. Proceeds of the donation will be donated to the Kg Saba Darat “A” fire victims. The organisers hinted that their next run could be sometime in August. Well done on the recent run and it was nice to see families also taking part in the 5km fun run category.

BIBD, SCOT brought smiles

BIBD through its Corporate Social Responsibility intiative, last weekend wrapped up the 2013 edition of the “Program Sirah Amal BIBD”, which was organised in collaboration with Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

This heart-warming BIBD’s initiative accomplished to visit more homes than previous years as they seek to fully maximise the efforts to help improve the lives of 100 families in all four districts during the month of Syaaban.

The event closed with representatives from BIBD and SCOT visiting the homes of families in the Brunei-Muara District led by the bank’s CSR team.

“Alhamdulilah, we are able to complete another year of our Sirah Amal initiatives, and we are looking forward to continually contributing to society in the years to come,” said Hjh Nurul Akmar Hj Mohd Jaafar, Head of BIBD’s CSR.

She also added, “It brings us great joy to be able to brighten up the lives of these people, especially ahead of the festive month, and to see all the smiles on their faces, telling us that we have actually done a very good deed.”

BIBD made a total of four trips to the homes of the unfortunate in all four districts. The families were selected through a list compiled by a few NGOs, and were presented with boxes of food hampers and donations, aimed to ease their burdens during the fasting month. BIBD and SCOT personnel were seen not only contributing daily necessities for the less fortunate but also their time and effort to visit the homes of these families.

One BIBD employee highlighted on how the initiative has opened his mind to remember those who are less fortunate and to be thankful for the opportunities that he gets in his life. He also shared his happiness at the chance to contribute in reducing the burden of the people the initiative affects.

The programme along with BIBD’s other initiatives such as BIBD ALAF, displayes the bank’s role and commitment in constantly listening and caring for the needs of the community, continuously underscoring the values of caring for the society.

“Program Sirah Amal BIBD” was initiated four years ago, by the bank’s CSR team with the combined efforts and resources by generous BIBD employees through internal fund raising.

Nyonya Culture workshop with Pearly

Cecilia Lee, Fun Bee Park’s Activity Consultant announced that Pearly Kee is coming to town to do a Nyonya cooking demo this weekend at Fun Bee Park. Check out details below!!

This should be interesting… What’s great about Cecilia Lee is that she likes to try to new things especially when she travels abroad. Did you know that the Baba Nyonya culture signifies the unity and inter-community of races in Brunei and Malaysia? I did learn some history of the Baba Nyonya culture in my trip to Malacca a few years back. I’ve always enjoyed the nyonya style cuisine and it’s good to know that Fun Bee Park will be hosting this Nyonya cuisine workshop this weekend.

They will be inviting Chef Pearly Kee, a fifth generation in the art of Nyonya cuisine, and she is a descendant of Kee Lai Huat the founder of Sungai Bakap, a small town in Sebarang Perai Selantan, Malaysia.

Brunei playing for 5th spot

Lisha Rahman playing central role for Brunei and she has the most minutes on court in all the matches. I don’t remember her being subbed out. Brunei U-21 beat Maldives 82-18 in the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship.

The Brunei coach expected that they were gonna win against Maldives yesterday and she knew it was gonna be a tough game against Thailand. Her biggest worry was the new injury to one of their attacking player Nur Syuhaidah who fell awkwardly in the 2nd half of the match. With injuries to Farul and now Syu, Brunei U-21 will have to make use of their reserve players as they take on Thailand for the 5th spot in the competition. Their star player Marhayati Ahmad is not fully fit but she will definitely be featured and play an important role against Thailand today. Another worry is Siti Nuratikah (Eika) who is nursing some blisters on her feet.

However, coach Thilaka Jinadasa was very happy with how her players played yesterday. She was proud how the girls have gone so far in the tournament and she felt that they need more games like this for exposure and experience if they were to improve. The players will benefit from this experience and this tournament is already a good eye opener for them. She said that they have never played so many games consecutively in a competition and hence fitness plays an important role. One player that she highlighted was Lisha Rahman who is the only player to play full time in all the matches and she’s one of the fittest player on court.

Brunei will take on Thailand later at 11:00am after a comprehensive victory over Maldives 82-18, their biggest victory in their competitive match. Come and support our national players and I hope they will achieve 5th spot in the tournament.

Maldvies played their best and I hope they will improve in years to come

Brunei rotated their players to give all of them a chance on court

A bad injury to Syu and it’s very unlikely that she will play later

Fifi of Brunei U-21 playing GK and she did pretty well

A tactical move that is legit in netball. It was the first time I’ve seen such defensive move in netball. Great attempt 🙂

Malaysia outclassed Singapore

I would have expected a Malaysia-Singapore final but I just learnt how freaking good Sri Lanka team is. Even coach Thilaka said that netball is a national sport for Sri Lanka. Anyway, I thought this match was quite interesting because it was a pretty close match in the first three quarters though Singapore was trailing most of the time.

The Malaysians were technically better than their opponents and they marked their players all the time, making it difficult for the Singaporeans to retain possession. The turnaround came in the final quarter where Malaysia just raised the bar and kept scoring at will.

Malaysia beat Singapore 52-32 in the first semi-finals of the tournament. Malaysia will face Sri Lanka in the finals while Singapore will take on Hong Kong for 3rd/4th place tomorrow at the Indoor Stadium.

Singapore attempting a shot against Malaysia

Shikin of Malaysia is one tough player to steal the ball from and her success rate of receiving passes is pretty high

Singapore’s GK was pretty vocal on the court

And she still kept the momentum despite being on a stretcher. Definitely one passionate netball player I’ve come across.

A tearful player as Singapore lost to Malaysia in the semi-finals

Sri Lank proved too strong for HK

I was telling my friends how I admire Kriesel of Hong Kong as GK because of her defensive capabilities. I knew she was gonna have a tough time against Sri Lanka and she did. Sri Lanka were simply unstoppable and their physique and strength gave them the competitive advantage against Hong Kong as they beat HK 70-28.

I expected a win for Sri Lanka and they steamrolled past Hong Kong in the first quarter 23-8. Hong Kong were forced to shoot from a distance while Sri Lanka had easy shots from the basket. The great thing about Sri Lanka is their depth in the squad as they were able to rotate their players and still give the same energy.

Of course, in the back of Sri Lanka’s mind is the finals against Malaysia. Sri Lanka have been losing finalists for the last three tournaments and they will want to better themselves by beating Malaysia tomorrow (1:30pm) in the finals.

BIBD today hosted some 31 student-leaders from the 4th Asia Pacific Leaders Education Program (APL EP) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) at their headquarter in the capital. The APL EP is an educational programme on leadership, bringing together student-leaders from the Asia Pacific region, Europe and North America.

The visit started with a talk by BIBD’s Managing Director, Mr Javed Ahmad, who welcomed them to Brunei and continued with a presentation BIBD’s on the importance and role of Islamic Finance and its leadership in Brunei, while outlining the differences between Islamic and conventional banking.

After the presentation, The APL EP student-leaders made their way to tour BIBD premises and were welcomed by BIBD officials. They were briefed on the function of the departments they visited, providing the students with more in-depth information about the bank. This also gave them a chance to have first-hand view and experience of BIBD’s facilities.

The aim of the visit was to provide the students with an insight and understanding of Islamic Banking, especially in Brunei, while also providing them a practitioner’s perspective on the roles of leadership in Islamic Finance, a topic that is covered in their syllabus.

Brunei U-21 aims for Top 5 finish

It was all set and done. We know who will face each other in the semi-finals. The host nation Brunei just missed the cut for the top four finish after come 3rd best in the round robin of the 8th Youth Asian Netball Championship of Group A. They were pitted against defending champions Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan and India. Brunei U-21 managed to get two wins out of four games and that was pretty awesome feat considering that they only took eight months to build the squad. Now Brunei U-21 team is vying for 5th spot in the competition as they will take on Maldives tomorrow at 2:30pm.

Malaysia beat HK last night with a convincing victory 51-19. The Malaysians also beat Brunei a day earlier with a similar score line 50-19. But it was the crucial match between HK and Brunei which decides who will come 2nd in the Group A and Hong Kong just edged Brunei 38-34 in a tightly contested match.

One of the favourites Sri Lanka had an easy game against Singapore as they beat them 63-40 yesterday. The result meant that unbeaten Sri Lanka topped Group B and they even had smashing score lines especially against Nepal and Maldives where they beat them 133-10 and 112-06 respectively. Singapore’s only loss in the group meant that they will be runners-up. Hence it does set up a mouth watering match between Singapore and Malaysia in the semi-finals later this morning at 9:00am at the Indoor Stadium.

Let’s hope Brunei will win their two remaining matches and finish top 5 in the tournament. Keep up the great work team and also to the coach and the management in rebuilding the youth netball team.

Sri Lanka are quick and very agile in their movement

I foresee them being in the finals

Malaysia vs Hong Kong was pretty one-sided too as they beat HK 51-19 yesterday

Woman to woman marking helps to close down opponents but you need the finese to consistently do it. The Malaysians are pretty good at it.

BSM Shell Stars Night

Managing Director of BSM Hj Mohd Sufri Hj Sulaiman was the guest of honour for the Shell Stars and Retailers Awards Night

Last week was a fun night for Shell retailers as Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd held a  Shell Stars and Retailers Awards Night at the Hua Ho Manggis Ballroom. Around 6 retailers had role play to entertain the audience and it was actually part of an on-going competition among all the Shell retailers in Brunei and five retailers were selected while one is a gimmick performed by comedian Si Racun.

The night began with a speech by the Managing Director of BSM Hj Mohd Sufri Hj Sulaiman who highlighted that illegal fuel smuggling have decreased and thanks to the monitoring of the authorities on such activities.

Did you know that subsidy loss from smuggling itself can cost an estimation loss of two million Brunei dollars each month? Amazing, huh? I know there are stories where certain individuals have tactics to bring fuel across borders with their modified fuel tanks and these individuals will come in numbers to carry out their smuggling activities.

The managing director also highlighted the importance of maintaining and upgrading Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) in fuel stations and he is thankful for the support of the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) for monitoring the safety level at all fuel stations and also at industrial locations for fuel delivery.

Below are the winners for the Shell Stars.

1. KODRAT
2. Amanah

Brunei defeated with grace

Brunei U-21 were still all smiles despite the loss to Malaysia 50-19 in the round robin match in the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship this afternoon

I knew it was gonna be a tough match. Brunei gave it their all. The defending champions Malaysia were simply unstoppable. Furthermore, they have more experience as well as the physique as compared to the Bruneians. Brunei only managed to score 4 points in the first quarter in reply to Malaysia’s 19 points. However, that didn’t demotivate the Brunei U-21 team. They still gave their 100% best on the court though we still made errors here and there.

The final score ended in a 50-19 victory to the defending champions. Brunei knew that the match against Hong Kong was the crucial one which they lost by 4 points two days earlier. Despite the final buzzer, the Brunei team was in high mood and still smiling because they knew they played to their best and they lost to a much better team.

Malaysia’s GS was formidable in attack and most passes she was able to receive with ease despite pressure from our defenders. That’s how good the Malaysians were. The visitors also used zonal pressing tactics whenever Brunei is in possession and their strategy paid off as Brunei kept committing turn overs from time to time.

There are still two more games to go for Brunei depending on the results in other matches. But I do hope for a miracle where we need a favour on Japan to cause an upset over Hong Kong which is a tall order.

Brunei’s coach Thilaka Jinadasa is very proud of her team. She said, “My target was to score around 25 points and we managed to keep the Malaysians scored at 50 and it’s good thing when you look at their experience that they have. I’m quite ok with our performance and also their fighting spirit and commitment on the court and they never gave up.”

Well done to our Brunei U-21 team and it is always awesome to see our local supporters cheering for the team from start to finish. I can see a bright future for Brunei netball. Later Hong Kong will take on Japan at 7:30pm at the indoor stadium.

Movie reviews

Despicable Me 2

Despicable Me 2. Hmmmm… There are mixed feelings about the sequel. Gru the main character in DM2 seemed to be overshadowed by the presence of the Minions which definitely brought some laugh to the audience including myself. I just felt that DM2 had too much reliance on the Minions. I also noticed the lesser appearance of the children who had more screen time in the first movie which kinda brought more emotions. Perhaps the storyline of the sequel were concentrating more on Gru’s new adventure.

If you haven’t watch the first movie, this is still a fresh watch and you will get a good laugh out of it. There were one or two scenes that failed to bring some sort of laugh so I thought that was awkward and even the audience didn’t respond to those particular scenes which were attempted failures to make the audience laugh. I still would recommend you to catch this movie. Feedback from my peers have been similar where they preferred the first one. At least the Minions are here to save Gru’s spotlight. Verdict: 7.5/10 Michelle 8. Rottentomatoes 72%

White House Down

White House Down. It didn’t do to well in the box office. Even the star power of Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx weren’t enough to topple The Heat in the box office with a mediocre opening of USD 25 million compared to The Heat’s USD $39 million. Channing Tatum is touted to be the next big thing after successful heats such as G.I. Joe, Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street and The Vow. Perhaps the audience were kinda tired since Olympus Has Fallen was screened a few months ahead and it also had a similar plot line.

There are some flaws in this movie and the pacing could have been more solid. I’m very particular when it comes to editing and it didn’t bring the best out of it. I enjoyed the chemistry of the two casts and Jamie Foxx was pretty comedic as the U.S. President. If you treat this as a popcorn movie, you will definitely get some thrills out of this. I prefer Olympus Has Fallen. Verdict: 7.5/10 Rottentomatoes 47%

World War Z

World War Z. Wowww… I might be biased but I’m a sucker for Zombie movies or TV shows. Anyway, this is one of the most satisfying summer movies and I was sharing with my friends that WWZ was kinda of a detox movie after catching the mediocre Man of Steel. Believe it or not, I caught this movie twice, once in Singapore and once in Brunei. There are a lot of lessons that can be learnt here especially for us individuals on how do we handle things when scenarios like this happen.

WWZ zombies are not the kinds you see on The Walking Dead. You just need to run for your life when the zombies become aware of your presence. Well, you get the hint. There were some bits that could have been improved but I was totally hooked and intense throughout the whole movie. It has been a while since I was at the edge of my seat. The last movie that gave me that feeling was Argo. I’m happy that there are making a sequel out of this. Maybe because of its success in the box office and plus there are still some unanswered questions. This could be Brad Pitt’s biggest movie after Mr. and Mrs. Smith. One of the best movies this summer, hands down. Verdict: 8/10 Seng Yee 8/10 Keeran 8/10 Sophia 9/10 Joanne Tan 7.5 Rottentomatoes 68%

The Heat

The Heat. Hmmmmm.. I don’t why but I judged this movie a lot. Maybe the movie was too predictable and I don’t like Melissa McCarthy as much. I saw the Identity Thief and ever since, she’s in my “unpopular” list of actors. Just like for some of my friends who doesn’t like the presence of Jim Carrey on screen. So yeah, I just feel urrggghh whenever I see McCarthy trying to be funny. Oh yeah, I did a count of swearing it had on screen and my count was 122 times on the F word *lol* Apparently there are 222 F words being said in The Heat *WOW* But not to worry as The Mall Cineplex take highly of censoring profanity which is a good move.

Sandra Bullock is charming as ever and I only caught the show because of her. Yes, I would agree that their chemistry on screen was somewhat eccentric but still bring a few laughs. What disappointed me are the predictability of the humour on some of the scenes. I just felt tired and restless and that set the tone for me for the rest of the movie. It’s not one of Paul Feigs best (the director) and I prefer his Bridesmaids more than The Heat. If you want some cheap laughs, you won’t mind catching this. Verdict: 4/10 Rottentomatoes 61%

Now You See Me

Now You See Me. Another popcorn movie that I kinda enjoyed with no high expectations. The trailer was great so I didn’t mind catching this. Morgan Freeman’s have been getting busy lately with movie releases this year (Oblivion and Olympus Has Fallen). He has another movie Last Vegas coming this year. For your info, this movie is about magic or perhaps illusions. The major problem I felt was the character developments which was kinda muddled in between and revenge plot seemed too far fetched if you ask me.

I surely enjoyed the movie but it didn’t have any lasting impression. I did mention on my IG review that some bits seemed illogical especially the final third act of the movie. The movie has so much promise where the director failed to explore. Nonetheless, I still entertained. It just lacked the depth and I wished the director didn’t use the ambitious approach and focused more on the characters. Verdict: 7/10 Seng Yee 7.5/10 Rottentomatoes 47%

Monster University

Monsters University. This movie comes to The Croods as the best animated movie of the year. The Croods was fresh, engaging and funny. MU almost delivered in that aspect and it’s something different that MU offers as compared to the Despicable Me 2. The plot has some interesting twists and the two lead characters Mike and Sullivan have some of the best chemistries. Pixar recently has been struggling for success and their formula on Cars 2 and Brave weren’t as good as I thought they would be. Now with MU, I could see better things to come for Pixar.

I won’t say it’s one of the best Pixar movies but it’s a progressive start from the recent slump they had. MU is bound to be biggest animation of the year after raking in great box office numbers. This movie will have a great fight with Despicable Me 2 for the No.1 animation though. If you ask me to compare between the two, MU has the slighter edge in terms of entertainment, plot and humour. Verdict: 8/10 Rottentomatoes 78%

Man of Steel

Man of Steel. Hmmmmmmm.. You know what? I just felt something amiss and I’m trying so hard to appreciate Zack Snyder’s latest work of Man of Steel. I’m still his big fan and I love his take on 300 and Watchmen. I felt dissatisfied that I even watched back the trailer “Fate of Your Planet” over and over again because that trailer was freaking good and still gives me the shivers. General Zod had that bad ass impression on the trailer but he was a major disappointment for me in MOS. For every superhero movie, to make it stands out, the villain must have such an impact with his or her on-screen’s presence to bring the best out of the movie. I just felt General Zod was a mediocre adversary at best.

The plot was something different and it was kinda expected coming from Snyder. Well, honestly, the plot was slightly different from the origins of Superman and I thought that was something refreshing. The flashback moments were alright but it could have been tighter in the story telling sense. Now Henry Cavill as the Clark Kent/Superman, he does look compatible but not much emotional chemistry formula was shown from him and perhaps Snyder could have focus more on this area. I know some of my female friends might be biased on their ratings because of Henry Cavill in tights *lol*

Sorry for all the rants but this is how I personally felt about MOS. I didn’t enjoy the ending on how Superman dealt with General Zod. It’s not so Superman like. I do, however, still enjoyed the movie experience especially on 3D IMAX in Singapore. The reviews have very mixed. Keeran and AnakBrunei gave it a thumbs up while most of my peers were disappointed. I am disappointed to an extent and it’s one of those hyped movies that I won’t watch twice in the cinema. I’m hoping for a better sequel 😀 If you haven’t caught it, I suggest you do. Verdict: 7/10 @lilmopiko 6.5/10 Billy Lim 7.5/10 @tiffanyyong 7/10 Rottentomatoes 56%.

Not just any clinic 😀

Dr. Jo’s desk and it doesn’t feel like a clinic

Last Sunday I had the privilege to be a guest during the soft opening of Wholistica Clinic which has just relocated from their previous premise in town. I have to admit that Wholistica Clinic doesn’t feel like a clinic at all. If you don’t believe me, you just have to pay a visit (when you are unwell or in need of a doctor that is) and you will understand what I mean.

I’ve known Dr. Jo Jaafar for many years and I’ve always joked with her that I want to visit her clinic if necessary but it never materialised because I didn’t fall sick *lol* So in the two weeks, I have made two visits (and now possibly my third since I left something there). Anyway, Dr. Jo is one awesome practitioner/doctor and I can’t emphasise how amazing she is. I shall save that for my later post on my insights and views of her clinic and also her vision.

Apart from the consultation and clinic services, Wholistica also provide chiropractic services by Dr Stephen J Chiarello himself. He has been in Brunei for a year now and his chiropractic services have been quite popular especially from cross fitters *lol* So now, you have back or neck problems, do visit Dr. Stephen and he can attend to your problems.

It was a warm soft opening last Sunday and I managed to catch up with a few guests too. The theme for the event was “Health and Wellness Appreciation Day” with the intention to send a message of the community to be more aware of their health and how we take them for granted most of the time. They also held free health check up and they also measure your BMI.

So where is Wholistica Clinic and Wellness? It is located at Unit A1 & A2, Simpang 92, Jln Gadong and it’s just opposite the road of NBT at Jalan Gadong. You can call them at 2428180 or 2243546. You can also follow them on instagram @wholistica_brunei

Dr. Stephen J Chiarello and Dr. Jo Jaafar of Wholistica Clinic. Thank you guys for hosting last Sunday 😀

Brunei 34 Hong Kong 38

Brunei U-21 did their best against Hong Kong but loss in a very tight contested match. Hong Kong won 38-34

It was a great effort by the Brunei U-21 team. I knew it was gonna be a tough match. I’ve seen how Hong Kong played against India the day before and the HK team gave Brunei a good run for their money. Despite the 4 point loss, this is still a great improvement for Brunei national netball team. They have trained for 8 months and this is their 2nd competitive international game against one of the dark horses of the tournament.

Connie Wong, head coach for Hong Kong, knew that Brunei will be a tough team to play against. She was happy that her players were able to focus despite the cheers for the Brunei team. She said their depth of squad was also instrumental in their matches so they were able to rotate players.

Brunei now have two more matches remaining but their top two finish seem difficult unless they can overcome the favourites and defending champion Malaysia. Today Brunei U-21 will take on India at 4:30pm at Indoor Stadium. So good luck to the players once again.

My prediction for the final are Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong in the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship. The finals will be held on Sunday, 7th July 2013.

My favourite player from Hong Kong – Kriesel 😀

Recap: Johor Experience

Click image to check places of interest in Malaysia

Aliya Zin in Johor. After a late night at Dataran Merdeka for the Colours of 1Malaysia Parade, we headed back to The Royale Chulan and grabbed a few hours rest before getting up in the wee hours to catch our AirAsia flight to Johor Bahru (JB). FYI, Airasia has 3 flights daily from LCCT to JB Senai Airport, and if you catch the AirAsia’s morning flight from Brunei, you can easily catch a connecting flight at 14:05 to JB, and still arrive in plenty of time to enjoy the better part of the day.

Admittedly, all of us were still sleepy so it was fortunate that joining us for this leg of the trip was AirAsia’s Ivan Ong, who herded us around the airport and made sure we got on the flight on time. The flight to JB is 45 minutes, like Brunei to KK. Upon arrival, we were picked up by our tour guide, Abg Zainal, and were taken to what I can only describe as heaven for Hello Kitty Lovers (a.k.a THE MOTHERSHIP! You can tell that this post is going to be biased already) Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park! Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park is a four story indoor theme park about 25 minutes from Senai Airport, and is an awesome place to take your little ones, which has Hello Kitty Town, Little Big Club and Lat’s Place.

Sanrio HELLO KITTY town features Black Wonder, a hi-tech interactive themed experience, where you must solve clues to save Hello Kitty and Daniel from the naughty Kuromi (and I insist that you MUST save them!); and Kitty House, an iconic Hello Kitty house complete with living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen (If I could move in there, I would!).

At the Wishful Studio, you and your kids can enjoy jewelry making, costume dress up at the photo studio as well as visit the nail salon where they can decorate their nails with Sanrio characters nail art. In addition, you can make and decorate Hello Kitty shaped cookies at the cookie studio and your very own Hello Kitty doll at the doll factory!

On the next two floors is The Little Big Club, where your kids can interact with all of their favourite HiT characters under one roof through a series of 6 themed interactive play zones – with games, rides, soft play areas, and more.

Amongst the 6 themed interactive play zones at The Little Big Club is the Angelina Ballerina play zone where your little dancing stars can dress up, play on a host of interactive touch-screen games, and even get a dance class from their favourite ballerina, Angelina. Bob the Builder fans will love the interactive ‘Build It Zone’ where they can join Bob’s ‘Can-do Crew’ and help their favourite builder by getting involved in all aspects of building a house. Barney’s play house is a re-creation of the set in the television series, and your kids can even watch Barney perform in his very own sing-a-long show.

Thomas the tank engine, a favourite of my nephew’s gets his own floor, with a variety of rides, play areas and his very own live sing-a-long show.  There’s even a giant jungle gym, where parents can join their kids crawling, climbing, sliding and getting into all sorts of trouble! (Being the good reporters that we are, we even tested it for you, and yes, we had a lot of fun!)

Lat’s Place is an interactive dining experience where patrons get to interact with characters from the comics in a village setting. For one and a half hours, a virtual day in the kampong, you get entertained by the characters, dining on delicious set menus, and receive a photograph of the experience which is all inclusive in the price. The characters will actually speak to you and the script is never the same, so it’s always a different day in the Kampong!

Hello Kitty Town in Johor

After Puteri Harbour, our guide, Zainal took us to the one and only, LEGOLAND! By then, we were running on pure adrenaline, and even the gloomy weather didn’t dampen spirits! Kids, both young and old will enjoy Legoland, as it offers attractions for the younger children, such as the Junior Driving school and Boating school, or compete with other families to be top of your class at the Rescue academy.

Of course, rides such as The Dragon rollercoaster and Lost Kingdom are subject to minimum height regulations, and children will need to be accompanied by adults. I guarantee that you will have a lot of fun getting wet on the Dino Island ride! (Insider tip : Bring extra clothing and put ALL of your belongings in a locker for safe keeping and to keep them dry, especially mobile phones! Ivan and I found out that even in your back pockets, your precious is not safe from the splash!) After a long day, we eventually made our way to The Thistle Hotel, a gorgeous hotel, and if you’re lucky, you will get a gorgeous view of the clock tower in JB, and of Singapore. After dinner, all of us crashed into our beds, as we had another fantastically early start to the morning the next day, this time to the mighty jungles of Endau Rompin!

This post is brought by Tourism Malaysia and AirAsia.

Nyonya Culture workshop this week

Cecilia Lee, Fun Bee Park’s Activity Consultant announced that Pearly Kee is coming to town to do a Nyonya cooking demo this weekend at Fun Bee Park. Check out details below!!

This should be interesting… What’s great about Cecilia Lee is that she likes to try to new things especially when she travels abroad. This time round she wants to share the Nyonya culture to the residents of Brunei and the activity that will take place this weekend is the Nyonya cooking workshop and the seats are limited (8 pax per session).

Brunei crushed Japan

The Brunei U-21 national team

I was waiting for this moment. The moment for Brunei Under 21 team to play against other countries as they were impressive in their build up into the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship. They caught my attention when played in the Setia Motors Netball Tournament a few weeks ago. Yesterday marked a memorable moment for our netball national team. The result itself caught many by surprise as Brunei crushed Japan 48-26 in the opening match of the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship and yes, Brunei is the host nation for this tournament.

The first quarter set the pace as Brunei U-21 as they were in scoring form, thanks to the attacking form of Eika and Syu. Farul, the center for Brunei, was instrumental as well while Fizah in goal defence made it difficult for Japan to attack. The first quarter was definitely their best performance as Brunei easily led 17-6.

Japan improved their gameplay but it was their errors and turnovers that cost them dearly. Their poor shooting percentage was also a factor in Japan’s low scoring outing and let’s not forget the great defending by F & F (Fiqah and Fizah). The only worry now is the fitness of Brunei’s star player Mar who started off from the substitute bench after recovering from injury a few weeks ago. She played in the 3rd quarter and it was good to see her in action. The coach Thilaka Jinadasa made a tactical change in the starting line up to save Mar’s energy for the vital game against Hong Kong today.

For your information, Brunei U-21 team is pitted in the same group with India, Japan, defending champion Malaysia and Hong Kong. Only the top two will go through for a semi-final spot. Hong Kong is another favourite apart from Malaysia to go through to the next round. Hence, this is a crucial game for the host nation to beat Hong Kong as the coach is aiming for 2nd place in the group. Hong Kong easily beat India 54-20 yesterday and Brunei must be wary of Hong Kong’s attacking prowess.

Coach Thilaka was still not impressed with her team despite the 48-26 victory over Japan. She said that there is still room for improvement and this is first game for the ladies to play against a different country competitively. “The players were a bit nervous and we cannot do this against Hong Kong (today) and we are like this careless against Hong Kong, it’s going to be very tough.”

Brunei will take on Hong Kong later at 2:30pm later at the Indoor Stadium. Entrance is free so the public is more than welcome to come and support the Brunei team. Yeah, I know it’s during the working hours but if you happen to be free (or you manage to get some MC *lol*), do drop by the Indoor Stadium today.

Regardless whether Brunei U-21 made it to the 2nd round or not, they have shown major improvement as Brunei netball team. I can see a bright future indeed for our Brunei national netball team.

Recap: AirAsia Experience

Click image to enter AirAsia website

Aliya Zin at AirAsia HQ. On my recent Mega Fam Colours of 1Malaysia and Visit Malaysia 2014 trip with Tourism Malaysia and AirAsia, I was fortunate enough to have a quick peek with what goes on behind the scenes of Asia’s leading and largest low-cost carrier. But besides the low prices and the awesome air crew in those lovely black and red uniforms, what is the Air Asia story? And how do they keep all those planes in the air? And is it true everyone can fly?

AirAsia’s Head Office is actually located in LCCT itself, who knew? The whole office is decked out in AA’s signature colour, and waiting in the lobby/reception area are the awesome cut outs of Tony Fernandes, Mark Lankester and Kathleen Tan from The Apprentice Asia. And of course, we managed to find a couple of pretty flight attendants to round out the picture! XD

By the way, not just anyone can check out the offices, you need to have a security pass to get around

I think most of you know about Dato’ Tony Fernandes, maybe you heard about his Billionaires Bet with none other than Richard Branson, or you know that he’s the Big Boss on The Apprentice Asia, (which I managed to catch a couple of episodes of when I was in KL. Tony seems scary in the boardroom, but super spot on with his assessments. I can see how he made AA the success story that it is!)

But how it all began is an interesting story, and in the lobby of the Air Asia offices I found an interesting piece of it..

In the picture you see above is the certificate and the symbolic RM1 that Tony Fernandes purchased Air Asia for in December 2001, with the airline heavily in debt. Under his leadership, the airline was flying high in 2002 and launched its new route that year. And that ladies and gentlemen is how you turn a failing airline into one of Asia’s biggest success stories to date.

The waiting area with the GINORMOUS TV!! Showing episodes of what else.. The Apprentice Asia.

Look at the number of accolades that AirAsia has won and earned

I really liked this poster.. AA calls all its staff All-Stars.. and they all take their job seriously.. which is why they can turn the plane around in 25 mins. *applauds*

This is positively my favourite part of the offices! Hahaha! The Chamber of Secrets!

One of their fleet of 118 aircraft. AA has an extensive network with 85 destinations.. They believe in the no-frills, hassle-free, low fare business concept, and being efficient helps to keep costs low. Just think, their efficiency passes on the savings to us, the passengers, so that affordable air travel becomes a reality, which is why their philosophy is “Everyone Can Fly…”

Although they are a low cost airline, you can still fly in comfort. You can select the hot seats (with extra room, perfect for us long legged giraffes!) when you book your seats on AirAsia.com. One of their key strategies is Low Fare, No Frills. It does mean that there are no complimentary drinks or meals offered on board, but you can actually purchase meals for up to 20% off when you pre-purchase while booking your ticket. Yay! And trust me, the food is yummy…

One of their best sellers is the Green Curry Chicken! I could not wait to dig in!

This is their Fried Rice with Chicken Satay… I’m kinda drooling as I write this… (Hi AA.. Mind sending some food over? Hehe!)

And of course.. Must have picture with my fellow travelers! Hi Jan Sun, Nabilah and Imelda! We all look kinda tired because we had a long day.. But here we are posing in the Hot Seats.. haha

Posing in front of the plane like I own it. LOL.

For your convenience, AirAsia has flights twice a day from Brunei International Airport to LCCT. You have the convenience of booking online at AirAsia.com or even on their AirAsia app! (As seen here on my iphone!) and it’s available in the Google Play store as well.

How it looks like booking through a mobile app

You can even book your flight up to 4 hours before scheduled departure time, but of course, the earlier you purchase your ticket, the better deal you get! You can even check in online, and just drop off your luggage at the Baggage Drop when you get to the airport.

Flying with AirAsia was an awesome experience! It’s so affordable, and with flights to many of Bruneians favourite destinations in Asia, like Manila, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul and Tokyo, it is simply the smartest way to fly.. I want to thank AirAsia and Tourism Malaysia for this awesome unforgettable trip.. I would also like to thank Ivan Ong for looking after us in Johor and Aarti Doshi for the tour of the AA offices and indulging my curiousity!

So what are you waiting for? Now is the time to Fly!

Bruneians at SEAM2013

Professional fighting game players EG.Justin Wong (L) of America and Tokido of Japan (2nd from R) with Bruneians Amir Noor, Denyze Veronique and Hilmi Shah.

Amir Noor’s report on SEAM 2013. Three Bruneians take on the international arena at the Southeast Asia Majors 2013 (SEAM2013) in Singapore 21-23 June, the region’s biggest fighting game tournament of the year.

The tournament was hosted at the Alienware Arena of Lucky Chinatown where more than 170 players from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, Hong Kong as well as Australia and America.

Some of the world’s biggest players attended to compete namely EG.Justin Wong, Tokido, Kazunoko, AVM.Gamerbee, Mike Ross and DM.MCZ.Xian; as many have known them to be top competitors around the world.

Players competed in popular titles such as Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition 2012, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Injustice – Gods Among Us, Street Fighter X Tekken, King of Fighters XIII, Soul Calibur V, Persona 4 Arena and Blaze Blue: Continuum Shift Extend.

Brunei was represented by three players; Shane Goh, Hilmi Shah and Counter Attack’s Amir Noor. Shane competed in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Soul Calibur V and Injustice; Amir joined Injustice and Street Fighter while Hilmi only took part in Street Fighter.

Impressively, Amir and Shane placed Top 10 for Injustice despite the tough competition against Australians and Indonesians but ultimately, the Singaporeans dominated the game all the way through Top 4.

Shane also got Top 10 in Soul Calibur V.

Things didn’t go so well for the other games as Amir and Hilmi barely made it past their early matches for Street Fighter.

Despite our losses, SEAM2013 has been a wake up call for our players in experiencing the level of skill and play of international players. What we were able to take back from the adventure was more friendships and ties with other international players along with the knowledge that Brunei’s Fighting Game Community needs to do more to be better at what they love.

Brunei left its mark at the SEAM2013 as communities from other countries now know of its players and potential to rise up to the challenge of facing their players. The next Southeast Asia Majors has yet to be set but more Bruneians are ready to rally and do their country proud.

SEAM2013 is one of the ‘Road to EVO’ events lined up for players in this region of the world. It allows players who are unable to attend majors in other parts of the world and earn ‘seed points’ for EVO, the world’s biggest tournament for fighting games.

EVO is considered the Olympics of fighting games where hundreds of fighting game players from all over the globe head to America for a chance to be dubbed the World’s Champion. The titles are stretched from all the different fighting games and takes place annually at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, USA.

EVO2013 will take place on July 12-14.
