In partnership with Darussalam Enterprise (DARe), Baiduri Bank has been organizing a series of skills training workshops for Brunei’s local entrepreneurs as a component of the Industry Business Academy (IBA).
Following the success of the inaugural workshop held in April, followed by the second workshop in August, today the third workshop, on the topic of e-commerce was held, conducted by Mr Eu Gene Ang, the founder and principal trainer of ClickAcademy Asia.
One of the participants of the course, Ms Elina Zin of Bloom Project, commented, “This workshop gave me a lot of confidence and motivation to elevate my website into an e- commerce site as they introduced not only strategies, but shared free tools and resources that I can use as I consider going into the e-commerce space.”
The workshop today focused on helping SMEs in Brunei understand key components in e- commerce and relevant tools and guide them in their decision to invest in e-commerce. Mr Ti Eng Hui, CEO of Baiduri Bank explained, “Today’s workshop is the final workshop out of a series, that Baiduri Bank has committed to run in collaboration with DARe for 2019. Our objective for this series has been to enable growth for local SMEs which we believe can be achieved by empowering them through education.”
Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) launched the Industry Business Academy (IBA) in July 2016 as an integral component of the MSME developmental programme to provide knowledge for aspiring or seasoned entrepreneurs who need to start, grow and export a business. Offering programmes focused on business plan writing, financial literacy and related topics, the IBA has played a pivotal role in developing the local MSMEs in Brunei.
The partnership between Baiduri Bank and DARe is aimed at implementing a series of skills training workshops designed to complement existing training programmes offered by IBA, thereby providing a more comprehensive, well-rounded training curriculum to local entrepreneurs, empowering them to achieve greater success in their business ventures.

At the Tokyo Motor Show 2019
The Tokyo Motor Show 2019 came to an end on the 4th November 2019. Those who attended were privileged to catch cutting edge vehicles such as self driving cars and much of the focus was also on mobility. My previous visit to the Tokyo Motor Show was back in 2013 so I would say the experience this time was totally different.
It was the first time the Tokyo Motor Show opened the exhibition to children, aimed at reversing the flagship attendance. The 2017 show drew a mere 770,000 people but this year, it managed to break the 1 million mark and finished with 1.3 million attendees in the 10-day Tokyo Motor Show.
It was participated by 192 carmakers according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) and I shall be focusing on the cars/vehicles introduced by Toyota and Lexus.
The members of the press were given a dedicated day (October 23) where the Presidents of the respective brands launched their products as the media got first hand viewing before the Tokyo Motor Show was opened for public viewing.

In the late morning, Yoshihiro Sawa, the International President of Lexus unveiled Lexus first ever electric vehicle (EV), the Lexus LF-30, which left the audience in awe. The LF-30 is more than a concept vehicle. The Lexus Electrified vision unveiled targets a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment, and let’s not forget autonomous driving and vehicle electrification.
What was interesting was the “Lexus Sense theatre” at the Tokyo Motor Show, a space where people can experience the simulation of five senses. es”. It consists of two experience spaces, audio and visual. In Theater 1, the sensual engine sound of Lexus LFA stimulates hearing with 360° 3D sound.
Theater 2 offers a visually stimulating experience with the Lexus LC model by projection mapping – which changes its appearance according to the time of day and the viewing angle. In this booth layout you can appreciate the Lexus philosophy, while enjoying sensory stimulation through “real experience”.

We also had a privilege to interview with Yoshihiro Sawa with other selected members of the press. He was quite welcoming individual with full of knowledge especially with the automative industry. When asked about how Lexus will positioned themselves among other luxury car brands, Sawa said that Lexus aims to be different from others and hence Lexus upped the scale by providing a more amazing experience for their customers. Hence, Lexus aims to focus on luxury lifestyle experience with the car rather than luxury car brand. He shared that the owners of luxury cars are not satisfied with just owning the product. They hunger for something more as they are eager to have a more unique experience.

In the afternoon, Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corp, had an interesting approach to the launch of their Toyota products, focusing on digital presentation on the mega horizontal interactive display on stage. Toyoda engaged the audience with his younger digital self and shared to all of us how “people will be the centre of the future.” With advancement of technologies in modern era of automotive industry, Toyoda can’t discount how important human capital is and still very relevant for both to co-exist.
The company also envisioned to position Toyota as a brand that focuses “mobility for all”. This is evident as the President announced models such as the e-Palette (electric modular vehicle) and Sora, a fuel celled electrified vehicle bus (refer to my previous blog post) that will be featured in the Tokyo 2020. This is definitely exciting times for Toyota, being one of the partners for Tokyo 2020.
The day ended with ended with a press conference hosted by JAMA where it showcased the global FIA Gran Turismo Championship 2019 World Tour 5 competition. This was held at the MEGAWEB area at the Aomi Exhibition Hall which also collaborated with KidZania. Hence, making this year’s Tokyo Motor Show 2019, the biggest in terms of variety since its inception.

The strong and dynamic styling of the all-new Rexton was inspired from the majestic look of the Greek temple Parthenon and SsangYong’s design philosophy “Nature-born 3Motion” in particular, the Dignified Motion was the motive behind the embodiment of Nature’s magnificent movement in styling.
The interior space aims to be a “redefined deluxe” which can be used for various purposes depending on the seat arrangement. The leather seat (hi-spec) which is the highest grade Nappa leather, the memory system that saves the preferred seat and door mirror positions of the driver are the features that increase the emotional quality for the passengers.
Now if you want talk about luggage space at the back, the all-new Rexton delivers. You can adjust the rear 3rd row seat and you can fit as many as 4 golf bags. That’s how spacious the back compartment can fit in.
For the driving specs, the all-new Rexton 7-seater has a G20DTR petrol engine and Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission (a plus for driver). A combination of a front double wishbone and a rear multi-link independent suspension ensures a high level of driving stability and riding feel.
For the safety features, it has the most airbags in the SUV segment, 9 in total including the knee-airbag for the driver and the side-airbags in the rear and also uses various advanced safety technologies including the newly developed quad frame made of advanced high-strength steel to provide class-leading safety for passengers.
For the tech features, the infotainment system installed in the all-new Rexton is one of the model’s most attractive features. It offers a wide 8-inch touch screen and it offers great connectivity with the mobile device. The Apple CarPlay provide a mirroring service while all the contents including Whatsapp and phone contacts can be viewed.
What I like the most is the 220V/115V inverter at the passenger seat. So you can actually charge your notebook/laptop if you want. A very convenient feature for a person like me.

Yesterday, Aifa Sdn Bhd, a sole distributor for LG, held a training session for the staff to be familiar with the current LG products ranging from washing machines to refrigerators to audio visuals (TVs). The training session was held at Aifa HQ at Lambak Kanan Industrial Area.
Present during the training session were Mr. Andy Lau, Managing Director of Aifa Sdn Bhd and Madam Lily Ngo, General Manager of Aifa Sdn Bhd. Conducting the LG training was Tan Wee How, Product Trainer/In-Store Management, LG Electronics Singapore Pte Ltd. He conducted a day workshop for the staff of Aifa to learn the functions and features of LG products that will be sold in Brunei Darussalam.
Mr. Andy Lau said that LG is one of the top products worldwide and he believes that it’s important for the staff to be aware of the LG products. Otherwise the products will be meaningless to consumers. Hence, training is very important in order for the staff to be fully equipped with the product knowledge and know-how so the consumers can feel more confident on LG products.
The training is normally conducted every one and a half year where the trainer is flown to Brunei as LG keeps introducing newer models/products. Hence training is very necessary.
Mr. Andy hopes that the consumers will enjoy the LG products that Aifa offers. With Hari Raya around the corner, why not invest in LG products? 🙂

We are heading towards a cashless society. It takes two to tango though – the consumers and also the merchants (retailers). It was easier to adopt when a bank introduces newer convenient services then such as ATMs, followed by online banking and transferring money through your mobile phones to another account. Now BIBD has provided a better platform where you can pay your services and goods through your mobile on selected merchants. This basically mean you don’t have to use physical money to pay over the counter. All you need is just your smartphone and waalaaa, you don’t need your change back physically and plus you will look cooler just by paying your items using your phone.
Yesterday BIBD emphasized how branchless banking have made it so convenient for their customers as it allows everyone and anyone to have access to financial services and they don’t even have to physically drop by a bank to do so. I was quite surprised that BIBD NEXGEN Wallet has generated more than 14 million worth of transactions in 2018 alone. That’s pretty high for such a small country like Brunei Darussalam. This really shows how technology has made it easier for the flow of money from one account to another account at your finger tips. Actually I am a high user of BIBD NEXGEN Wallet as I have received and send payments through the BIBD mobile app.
The next step now is to actually capitalized on the latest featured made possible by BIBD and Progresif and that is making payments to the merchants using your phone through BIBD’s QuickPay and Progresif’s Progresif Pay.

With mobile penetration, it will create even a bigger digitized financial ecosystem and it will help spur the economy due to the convenience. This will also be a win-win situation for both consumers and even the merchants because of the lowered set-up costs and the barrier to entry (in business) is low too.
So far, they are 100ish merchants that have used QuickPay and one of the leading merchants is Fuel’d, a popular healthy food joint in Kiulap. As more people getting the hang of using digital payments through mobile phones, future merchants/retailers will see the surging demand of cashless payments through means of paying through your mobile phones.
Progresif’s latest product Progresif Pay have entered the market and now they have even bettered their mobile app. You don’t have to be a Progresif subscriber to make use of Progresif Pay (Awww, nice of you) and you can switch numbers through the App as well at your convenience. I am happy for the fact that you’re able to buy iTunes credit through their e-credit tab on the Progresif Pay. Now that’s very convenient.
If you really want to know more about BIBD’s QuickPay and Progresif’s Progresif Pay, head over to MSME Festival to be held at the BRIDEX International Conference Centre 28th to 31st March and you will see some vendors (especially the ice-cream vendors) making use of these said services. You will see how convenient it is to make payments and furthermore, it is secured.
What I am more excited is that you can even pay through means of NFC where you simply tap on your smartphone on the merchant payment terminal and your transaction will be completed, just like that. Easy, huh? I know Brunei is currently behind when it comes to NFC or payments through mobile phones but the momentum is slowly growing and kudos to the first 100 merchants in believing the power of cashless transactions.
We are definitely heading on the right direction and thank you to BIBD and Progresif on making this service available in the Brunei market.

Farah Saiman was one of the first few early customers to register for the Samsung Galaxy S10+ phone plan.
