The anniversary cake done by Mr. Baker’s Shop
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman receiving a token of appreciation from Stephen Ong, Chairman of St Andrew’s School Board of Governors and Jane Keasberry, Principal of St. Andrew’s School.
St. Andrew’s School (SAS) alumni from as far as London, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Singapore, flew into the country to attend the school’s Diamond Jubilee Alumni Gala Dinner yesterday night at the Plenary Hall of International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman, who were also former students of the school, graced the dinner.
Their Royal Highnesses were greeted upon arrival by Chairman of St Andrew’s School Board of Governors, Stephen Ong and Principal Jane Keasberry.
The colourful evening started with the welcoming address by the principal followed with another speech by Ong after which Their Royal Highnesses were ushered to the cake cutting ceremony to mark the event.
Keasberry in her welcoming address among others noted that the gala dinner is a platform for meeting up and reconnecting with former classmates, teachers and staff of the school.
She pointed out that with the formal schooling (foundational-secondary years) provided at SAS, each one of the students can testify to the strong foundation received from their alma mater.
“Education at SAS has made us what we are now with many of us serving and holding key positions in the community and contributing strongly to the development of Brunei Darussalam.”
SAS began with 70 boys and girls 60 years ago in January 1957 and it was founded by the late Reverend Canon Paul Chong En Siong who together with his daughters Margaret, Kathleen and Grace, were the first teachers in the makeshift “school”, at the back of the St Andrew’s church vicarage.

Over time, the first chairman of the Board of Governors, Dato Ong Kim Kee generously donated a piece of land and the first set of classrooms with wooden floors and walls were built on this site and later with generous funding from parents and other kind individuals, more classrooms were added.
St Andrew’s School, with the hard work of the former and current Board of Governors, principals and senior management team, has grown to 1,710 students in strength with 106 teachers and staff, Keasberry said adding that it will continue to grow from strength to strength with continued support from the community.
The dinner also saw a slide show presentation as well as several stage performances including a tribute by the alumnus.
Their Royal Highness also consented to a group photo session with the Board of Governors and School Management team as well as a tour of the exhibition booths displayed at the hallway. Text courtesy of Lyna Mohd of Borneo Bulletin.

Hello Elva. Here was where we sign our memories
Rano’s take: Definitely I had a great time catching with my buddies from my class with Pg. Anak Ali and Rashid @ Rupert and not forgetting our former teachers from the school, Mrs. Ong (Maths), Mr. Chong (Malay and now Deputy Principal), Ms. Normah (Malay) and ever bubbly Mrs. Shafee (history). It was good to see familiar faces though our batch didn’t turn up that much and I was amazed that some of the people that I know used to be in SAS.
Of course, the most sought for teacher was Mrs. Shafee and it was funny to see her frowning when she tried to recall her former student names, tracking back to the 80s and the 90s. For sure, she still remembers me as we tend to bump to each other once in a while or so. She definitely has touched many lives of our students and shaped to where they are now. A big thank you to all the teachers who played parts in our lives too.
The only person that I really wanted to see or meet was Mr. Koshy, our Maths teacher and also the Principal of SAS back then. He had the biggest cheers when his picture popped up on the screen. I hope he’s in good health.
Thank you, Stephen Ong, for your hospitality and we all had a wonderful evening. The legacy continues in St. Andrew’s School and I’m already seeing better things happening in SAS. Keep up the great work!!

Audi has recently extended its Q family with a compact SUV. The Audi Q2 is an urban-type vehicle for everyday driving and recreation, bundling a progressive design and great driving pleasure with a high level of functionality. Connectivity, infotainment and assistance systems are on the level of the full-size category
Looking for something exciting to do this weekend? Meet the car that won gold in Germany’s Biggest Ladies’ Choice and was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best Award for its superior design quality and trendsetting design. Happening this weekend, Audi Brunei will be hosting a test drive event that is open to the public for everyone to experience the all new #untaggable Audi Q2!
The Audi Q2 is a small crossover compact SUV that comes with loads of exciting features such as the LED lighting inlays which are changeable up to 10 color choices creating a more personal feel. Also another highlight feature of the Audi Q2 is the progressive steering which makes the Audi Q2 to have a greater direct steering response. This provides a greater precision with less effort for easier maneuvers into parking spots and around corners. You may also want to experience the Audi drive select which is available in the Audi Q2. The Audi drive select allows you to alter the character and handling of the Audi Q2. Available modes is the Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Efficiency – each adjusting the steering weight and throttle response to suit your driving style and road conditions.
The weekend showroom test-drive event will be held on the 5th and 6th of August 2017 from 9am until 4pm at the Audi showroom in Kiarong. Members of the public are welcome to test-drive not only the Audi Q2 but other available Audi models as well. Personally I’ve driven the Audi Q2 and so much to love about it.
Standard in the Q2 is a 5.8-inch MMI screen that is positioned high up on the instrument panel. The infotainment system can be operated by a rotary/push-button control and two buttons on the center tunnel
The Audi Q2 is a powerful SUV that exhibits a very distinct character. At the front, a strong image is created by the Singleframe grill in octagonal design that is positioned up high as well as by the large air inlets
Especially eye-catching is the low roof that descends and merges into the C-pillars with color offset blades. This contrast accentuates the sportiness of the Audi Q2
Audi driver Lucas di Grassi is the new champion of the worldwide Formula E electric racing series. After taking the lead of the standings with a lights-to-flag victory in the first of the two final races in Montreal (Canada), the Brazilian from Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport wrapped up the title on taking seventh place on Sunday.
Di Grassi had arrived in Canada for the final weekend with a ten-point deficit to Renault driver Sébastian Buemi. While the Swiss was ostensibly tense and, following an accident in free practice, had a horrible day on Saturday, di Grassi made no mistakes and converted his deficit with his pole position and lights-to-flag victory in an 18-point advantage.
On Sunday, di Grassi and his teammate Daniel Abt started from the third row while Buemi only took position 14 in qualifying. Following a turbulent starting phase, di Grassi and Abt dropped to positions nine and ten some of the time but, also thanks to clever energy management, were able to fight back to positions six and seven. As a result, Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport secured the vice-championship in the teams’ classification as well.
“Today is the best day in my career,” the new Formula E Champion enthused after the race. “I’ve believed in Formula E from day one because the world, including motorsport, is changing. Three years ago, we won the first Formula E race in Beijing and now finally the title as well. ABT Sportsline, Schaeffler and Audi Sport have done a perfect job – not least after the races in New York where we weren’t so strong. Here in Montreal, on the best race track Formula E has ever seen, we were fast from the beginning.”
Following third place in Formula E’s inaugural year and the vice-championship last year, Lucas di Grassi is the third champion in the world’s first all-electric racing series and, with a total of six victories and 20 podium results in 33 races, one of the most successful Formula E campaigners. In the 2016/2017 season, the Audi driver won two races, clinched three pole positions and seven podium places in twelve races. Only in Paris, di Grassi scored no points. In the end, this consistency was decisive in the title race, although his comebacks at the season opener in Hong Kong and on clinching victory in Mexico will remain equally unforgotten.
“For me, Lucas di Grassi is currently the most complete driver in Formula E,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. “What he showed in Montreal on Saturday was simply fantastic. After New York, there probably weren’t a lot of people expecting him to be able to turn the tables in the title race anymore. But Lucas never gave up for even a second and continually motivated the whole squad to deliver top performances. The entire team around Hans-Jürgen Abt and Thomas Biermaier did an outstanding job and Daniel Abt, who was beaten a little below his potential this year, drove strong races in Montreal too. This has been a tremendous finale and a good week on the whole for Formula E. That, after BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are going to follow us into this forward-thinking racing series underlines the growing importance of fully electric motorsport. I’m already looking forward to the opener of the new Formula E season in Hong Kong in December when our factory-backed commitment opens up a new chapter in Audi’s motorsport history. With ABT and Schaeffler as our partners we’re in a very good position in the increasingly tougher competition.”
Lucas di Grassi was born in São Paulo on August 11, 1984 and lives in Monaco together with his wife, Bianca. The Brazilian won the prestigious Formula 3 Grand Prix in Monaco in 2005 and was active in Formula 1 as a test and race driver before joining Audi in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2012 and mounting the podium in the Le Mans 24 Hours three times. As a test driver from day one, he helped make Formula E reality. Now, he is its new champion.
All smiles from Vincent Pao, General Manager of Concepts Computer and Jacky Chang, President of D-Link International as Concepts Computer was handed the certification of Authorised Distributor of D-Link products at Brilliance Hall, Concepts Computer yesterday.
William Lin, a representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Darussalam, Jacky Chang, Vincent Pao and Alice Chan during the exchange of document
Yesterday marked a new milestone for Concepts Computer. Though we have seen D-Link products before in the local market, it never had an authorised distributor in the country.
Hence it was the first time for Brunei to recognized as a distributor and partnered with Concepts Computer as their distributor. Brunei became the last country in the ASEAN to have a local distributor. It was the hard work of Vincent Pao, General Manager of Concepts Computer, to make this journey possible and he was very thankful to Mr. Jacky Chang, the President of D-Link International for believing in Concepts Computer to be the authorized distributor for Brunei market.
The signing ceremony between Concepts Computer and D-Link International took place at the conference room at Concepts Computer. It was signed between Vincent Pao and Jacky Chang. Also present to witness the signing ceremony were William Lin, a representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Darussalam and Alice Chan, the Financial Controller for Concepts Group of Companies.
This event was followed by speeches from Vincent Pao, William Lin and Jack Chang.
Did you know that D-Link is one of the top brands in Taiwan? It was founded back in 1986 and their core segment is more into networking solutions and it’s no surprise that they have worldwide recognition as leading networking company in SMB segment and Wi-Fi product shipment over the years.
Jacky Chang believed that there is a potential market in Brunei Darussalam as there is a generally high standard of telecommunications infrastructure and services. Let’s not forget that the mobile subscribers has increased to 111% in 2016 from 2015 and this means internet penetration also increased.
Hence, the products that D-Link offer are relatable to our local market. They have various of consumer products such as 3G/4G routers, wired and wireless routers, IP cameras, range extenders, powerline, smart home solutions to name a few.
Now if you are looking for SMB products, then there are devices such as managed and smart switches, surveillance solutions, unified service routers and structured cabling solutions and accessories.
The partnership between Concepts Computer and D-Link will create opportunities to grow in the Brunei market and sees Concepts Computer as one-stop-shop for networking solutions. Jacky Chang praised Concepts Computer with the confidence that they will be able to deliver the service to their customers.
Jacky Chang praised highly of Concepts Computer during his welcoming remarks and trusts that D-Link will grow with the support of Concepts Computer
Vincent Pao is always up to date with the technological trends. He ended with someone’s quote “if opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door”

What products to look out when it comes to D-Link.
D-Link’s DCS-5030L. A peace of mind with 24/7 monitoring of any environment. It provides a good range of features to help you monitor large areas of your home or small office anytime, anywhere effectively. Of course it can be linked to your mobile through an app and this makes it easy for users to easily set up the D-Link IP camera in no time.
This camera is a standalone surveillance camera that requires no special hardware or software, and can run independently even without a computer. You can even select areas of the video image to monitor for motion, allowing you to effectively monitor areas such as entryways.
The smart thing is that you can set volume thresholds to determine the sound level required to trigger a notification. An example could be a sound of a vehicle or even a crying baby. It also powered by infrared LEDs which allow for night time viewing up to 5 metres. Awesome!!
This is a highly recommended camera and it’s only BND 148 at Concepts Computer.

A customized and personalized cake for Wu Chun from the pastry chef during the launch of the Bake Culture at Serusop branch
During the launch of the third outlet of Bake Culture at Serusop, Wu Chun announced expansion in China and USA by 2017 for Bake Culture. Interesting to know that Wu Chun has bigger plans for the successful bakery that is popular in Brunei and Taiwan.
He hinted that by November, Bake Culture will be opened at Chongqing, China and followed by another outlet in New York, USA. Both outlets are in the process of renovation.
One of the local signature item, Roti Satay, will be introduced in the said outlets and the idea is to spread and share the culture of different countries.
He also highlighted that the pastry chefs have been trained for the past twelve months inclusive of food tasting for the customers’ needs.
It was also good to see Wu Chun fans flying in from China to support the launch and Wu Chun humbly enough spent time with them and took photos.
The other question that was put forward to Wu Chun was on the upcoming movie where he is being featured, “My Other Home”, an upcoming Chinese-American sports biographical film directed by Yang Zi and produced by Huang Jianxin, starring American basketball player Stephon Marbury as himself. Awesome. It’s not sure when the movie will be out in Brunei but it is slated for a China release on 4th August and yes, China is a huge market for sure.
Congratulations Wu Chun on the expansion of Bake Culture (oh ya, he loves banana muffin from Bake Culture) and I hope to see your movie in Brunei hopefully 🙂

Now, how I wish we can have more of this in Brunei.. I’ve attended many sessions in terms of grooming presenters and pitchers when it comes to presenting business ideas. It’s never an easy feat if you are new but once you get the hang of it or master it, you will enjoy it even more.
The event known as Startup Weekend Brunei was organised by young, vibrant bunch from the Creative Core BN and the event was held at the Progresif Headquarters Event Hall. Basically Startup Weekend is a 54-hour entrepreneur workshop and the goal is to create an an environment where passionate people can come together and have an experiential education on all things startup from networking, collaborating and exposing potentials to see real results from idea to action.
Sometimes I wish I can still be part of it as my mind is still boiling with ideas and I also realised how I love the business side of things and always open to opportunities if given. Hence this platform given by Startup Weekend is an excellent platform and only given in a space of 3 days in translating your ideas into a business pitch.
The responses were pretty good as they had commendable sign ups for the said event. Last Sunday was the final day of the 54-hour entrepreneur week where six teams had to deliver their ideas and its lucrativeness to entice the judges to buy their ideas.
The panel of 3 judges were Radi El-Fassed the Head of Product Development Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd, Rahimah Yussof thr Co-Manager and WTM Lead, Google Developer Group Brunei and lastly Hamdi Matussin (NJ) Creative Director, Mixmediaworx.
The winner of the Startup Weekend Brunei was team Living Nest. They were awarded with a return flight to Kuala Lumpur and also attend the ASEAN Rice Bowl Startup Awards.
Second place went to team Do Good which was my favourite of the lot while team Nakhoda came third place.
I love this see more of this and I hope other stakeholders can take note on conducting a successful event like how the Creative Core BN has done for the Startup Weekend Brunei. This is also a good awareness program to urge the youth that entrepreneurship shouldn’t be taken lightly or even as a last resort.
The inaugural weekend long workshop was made possible by support mainly from Progresif Cellular, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam and Darussalam Enterprise. Keep up the good work.
I have missing all these prestigious events and finally I had a taste of Bersama Rakyat with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalamn conjunction with His Majesty’s 71st birthday celebration at Taman SOAS. It was not as crowded as previous years but the spirit remains high. The people of Brunei Darussalam got up close and personal to greet His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and other members of the Royal Family.
Also attending the ceremony were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik; and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.
I missed the performances but judging from the pictures, it looked pretty colourful and vibrant. I can’t imagine the stamina and the willingness of His Majesty the Sultan, even at the age of 71, to spend at least 2 hours in the humid conditions to meet and greet. I truly salute His Majesty for his dedication and time to spend time with the people and may Allah bless him for his generousity and kindness.
